Shadow Silhouette Splatter Painting

Saturday, April 09, 2011 3 comments
I had this little idea last Christmas when I made this Abbey Road/Beatles splatter painting (source attached to the original link).  I've been in love with silhouette for a long time now, but I have no little kids, and I didn't have any side profiles of my friend's kiddos-my favorite source of craft experiments, until Kristine shared this precious photo of her daughter taken from the side.
I printed it off, cut out Kate's silhouette, painting the canvas, and then used adhesive spray to place the photo in one corner.
I used a second color, and I painted and splattered.
I let it dry, and then the photo pealed away without any mess.  I think it's a fun alternative to all the other great shadow works of art out there, and it would be really cute in a variety of colors for a Mom.

Do-It-Yourself Canvas "Print"

Friday, March 11, 2011 9 comments

This isn't exactly a week of art, but it's my third day of an art related post, I guess I got a little carried away.  I saw this idea....somewhere.  I like canvas prints, but they are really expensive, so I decided to try this out.  The tutorial I saw used boards, but I used a canvas I bought with a coupon at the craft store.  I printed off a picture of some ducks I took last fall at the state fair on the midway.
I mod podged the picture to the canvas, and then added another layer on top to seal it.
I might use a foam brush next time to eliminate brush strokes, but I still like the way it turned out, and I'm planning on making more of these for my living room using some of my favorite photos.  I think I'll paint the edge of the canvases black.  Basically, this isn't the last you'll hear about this.  Consider *yourself* warned!

Art Bucket 'O Fun Gift

Thursday, February 10, 2011 3 comments
One of my favorite things about the Dallas Art Museums (yesterday's post) are the programs they have for the kids.  During special events, and daily visits, they provide opportunities for kids to explore the world of art through mask, and various materials that align with the various exhibits.  When I went to the museum this last time, there were groups of kids with guides exploring a large section of silver wares.  They had foil, and Styrofoam dishes, and they were creating their own shiny dish.  I decided to send my friend's son a bucket 'o art for this birthday.  It's the gift that keeps giving (his Mom headaches).  I went to all my favorite craft stores, and explored their dollar section for various mediums, and then I included an apron, and permanent markers for him to decorate his own art smock.  I stuck them all in a bucket, and might add some vinyl letters to spell out his name, just because I can.  Or I might not, just because I don't have to.

Salad: Fruit Salad Collage

Wednesday, January 12, 2011 6 comments
The best part of this salad is....there are no calories at all.  I saw this cute project for making a fruit collage for your kitchen on Oh, Write.  In my quest to have one slice of art work (I use the term lightly) by me, in each room of my house, I decided to try this out.  It was really easy, and fun, and has me motivated to do some other, similiar projects.  In her tutorial, she uses little square boards, that would have made this totally free, but I decided to use these little canvases from the dollar section (in the toy area) of Michaels.
I also grabbed two sheets of paper, and scraps I keep from scrapbook projects, mod podge, and black paint.
I painted the edge of the canvases.
I then cut the paper down to size, and used my scraps, scissors, and random shape punches to make my fruit salad of choice.  I've recently completed some kitchen renovations, so I'll take a picture of them in their new home soon!
