Fucked Up - The Chemistry Of Common Life

this punk-ass hardcore band from Canada shows some mad skills in music making. its a little hard these days to start a punk band and actually stand out from the rest. pushing the limits of its hardcore roots and making some good ol` noisy piss music while having a beautiful cover art for their debut album makes it worth to listen to. their live shows are a bit of a spectacle; things get destroyed and people get hurt. good times. the campo-formio boys are going to love this.

Radio Birdman - Radios Appear (1977)

FUCKING AMAZING ALBUM! This band just fucking rocks. Deniz Tek's guitar work really inspired and influenced me as a guitarist. Get this NOW!

"Early Australian punk band Radio Birdman formed in 1974 and began recording in 1976 when the single ”Burn My Eye” was released. They took their name from a misheard lyric in Stooges song, ”1970”. (The actual line is “Radio burnin’”) Their first LP, Radios Appear, showed diverse influences, including Detroit bands of the late 1960s, such as The MC5 and The Stooges. The album was totally ignored by commercial radio but was championed by Sydney station 2JJ (Double Jay) and became sufficiently successful in Australia to lead to a contract with Sire Records (US label, home of The Ramones), who released a different version of Radios Appear internationally. It took three years to record a follow-up, Living Eyes, and by then, the Australian punk scene had diversified and the band broke up before the LP was released.

The band’s lyrics reference US-born guitarist/main songwriter Deniz Tek’s home state of Michigan, with lyrics from tracks such as “Murder City Nights” referring to Woodward Avenue in Detroit:

“Cruising down Woodward gotta find me some action/Looking for a lover with a power reaction.”

Many of their other songs, such as “Hand Of Law” & “Descent Into The Maelstrom” deal in apocalyptic images of war and violence, but these are more than balanced by the lighter pop culture references of tunes such as “Aloha Steve & Danno”, an ode to the TV show Hawaii 5-0."

the hand of law is coming down

Rudimentary Peni - Death Church (1983)

I discovered this band in 2002 and have been enjoying and recommending it to all my friends ever since. It's only fair I share it with all of you as well. Unfortunately, I sold my copy of this CD along with a bunch of other fine h/c punk and punk classics when I found myself in need of some money. Hopefully I'll get the original LP again some day.

"Rudimentary Peni (1980 - present) emerged from the anarcho-punk scene in the UK in the early eighties as one of the most novel and recognizable acts of the era.

Lead singer/guitarist Nick Blinko is notorious for his witty macabre lyrics and dark pen-and-ink artwork, prominently featured on all of Rudimentary Peni’s albums. Blinko is also rumored to have written the band’s Pope Adrian 37th Psychristiatric album whilst resident in a psychiatric hospital, having suffered from mental illness most of his life, as such, the subject matter of the album relates to the delusions Nick was experiencing at the time, particularly the idea that he was said Pope. Nick’s subject matter has been influenced by the work of H.P. Lovecraft who he had studied after having delusions of the macabre element of life and hereafter. Bassist Grant Matthews has also written a number of songs for the band, though his lyrics primarily focus on sociopolitical themes. The band also features drummer Jon Greville.

Very few photos exist of the band, as their albums feature Blinko’s drawings, but artist and record label owner Pushead published a few photos of the band in an early edition of his magazine.

The band had early connections with Crass, and released their Farce EP on Crass Records. Though they stopped performing in the 1980s after bassist Grant Matthews was diagnosed with cancer, they continue to record and release material today, though they rarely give interviews."

Rocket From The Tombs - The Day the Earth Met Rocket From The Tombs (1975)

FUCK YES!
Formed in the early 70’s by the monstrous Crocus Behemoth (aka David Thomas), Rocket from the Tombs represented Cleveland’s dying factories and urban wasteland just as the Detroit pre-punks had done in regards to their decaying city. After sometime, the group caught the eye of guitarist Peter Laughner. Laughner joined RFTT and along with bassist Craig Bell, drummer John Madansky, and guitarist Gene O’Connor, the lineup was solidified.

From the beginning, tensions ran heavily through the band as Behemoth’s vocals were unlike anything heard before (save Captain Beefheart) and could only be tolerated by Laughner. What’s more, RFTT had a thoroughly artistic approach to their music and Laughner and Behemoth, strongly influenced by Lou Reed and later Television, had an even more artistic direction they wanted the band to head in. This clashed with the other members’ loud/fast ethos that fell more in the vein of the Electric Eels and The Stooges.

In late 1975 the group would split into two radically different beings. Laughner and Behemoth (now Thomas again) would form the highly artistic punk/experimental band Pere Ubu. Meanwhile, Gene O’Connor and John Madansky would change their names to Cheetah Chrome and Johnny Blitz respectively. They in turn recruited a young man named Stiv Bators (born Steve Bator) who had once auditioned for RFTT as lead singer.

"Before the Dead Boys, there was Rocket from the Tombs. Most of the stuff on this CD you'll recognize from Young, Loud, and Snotty. Songs like "Sonic Reducer" "What Love Is" and "Down In Flames" were pretty much all written before the formation of the Dead Boys, with slight variation. Peter Laughner essentially penned the original lyrics to these songs, though they were later re-written and re-arranged by Stiv Bators. Cheetah Chrome and others later left Cleveland for New York City where they reformed the band and began playing as the Dead Boys.

This is a great collection of RFTT's only available material. Despite never having formally recorded, only one rehearsal demo and these two sets are known to exist, the sound quality is surprisingly good. The whole thing is real gritty and raw with a total Stooges/Alice Cooper/MC5 vibe to it. "Ain't It Fun" is especially great. Super mellow and strung out, like something you might hear while shooting up in a drug den somewhere. "Never Gonna Kill Myself Again" is a total Rolling Stones floor stomper and maybe has the coolest song title ever. Lots of stuff on here to keep your interest."

ain't it fun?

Minutemen - Double Nickels On The Dime (1984)

Do yourself a favor and get this, you little freaks. This is probably one of THE most important records to ever come out of the California punk scene.

"Minutemen were a highly influential, freethinking punk rock trio from San Pedro, CA, comprised of guitarist/vocalist D Boon and his childhood friend, bassist/vocalist Mike Watt, along with a former high school classmate on drums, George Hurley.
The group played funk influenced punk rock music in the early 1980s never finding (or even seeking) much mainstream success, but influencing many subsequent musicians. The group ended when Boon died in an automobile accident in Arizona in December 1985.
They were influenced heavily by bands such as Wire, Gang of Four, The Pop Group, The Urinals and also funk bands of the late ’60s and ’70s were an important influence. nearly all of their early songs had unusual structures and were less than a minute long — even later when the Minutemen’s music became slightly more conventional, their songs rarely passed the three-minute mark."

Turbonegro - Apocalypse Dudes (1998)

My favorite rock n' roll band's classic masterpiece! This album changed my life!

"Apocalypse Dudes presents Turbonegro's trademark deathpunk sound in a mighty rockin' fashion, "a new resurgence of glam rock'n'roll" as the Boomba announcement put it - much due to exceptional guitarist Euroboy, who was playing with the band live since 1996.

Moshable magazine commented: "Apocalypse Dudes is the perfect mix of classic 70's US punk / rock'n'roll like The Dictators, The Heartbreakers & The Ramones... every tune on this release is fucking brilliant". Even Jello Biafra was quoted as saying, "the new Turbonegro record is possibly the most important European record ever.""

Nation of Ulysses - 13-Point Program to Destroy America

Very influential yet short-lived DC political punk/post-hardcore band. Known for their intensity, they weren't afraid to show their varied range of influences from Ornette Coleman to political instigator Guy Debord and his "Situationist International" collective. It's more proof that Dischord is one of the best indie labels ever.

They also published a zine called "Ulysses Speaks" which was handed out at their shows.  You can read some of them here.

Get the album HERE.

Black Flag - My War

Henry, your stand up and spoken word fucking suck. Sorry man. You also can't hold a candle to Chavo (of Puerto Rican descent!) when it comes to Black Flag singers. Too bad he lost his mind and is now a born again Christian.

Anyway,  you will get my props for having the guts to play this muddy, sludgy, Sabbathy, slow as shit noise in front of a bunch of punk kids all while getting cigarettes, spit, and piss thrown at you.

Ginn's guitar playing is as atonal as ever and the 3 song barrage of Nothing Left Inside, Three Nights, and Scream is some of the most intense shit Black Flag ever did.

Big Black - The Rich Man's Eight Track Tape

This album is a CD compilation of Big Black's Atomizer album & the Headache EP. For anyone not familiar with Big Black's sound imagine an afternoon in the woods with a serial rapist about to sodomize you with a chainsaw when all of a sudden a rock slide engulfs you both.
"Big Black was a band that went where few bands dared to go (and where many felt bands shouldn't go), and for good or ill their pervasive influence had a seismic impact on indie rock. At the same time, Big Black was a group who maintained firmly held ideals when it came to doing business; they paid for their own recordings, booked their own shows, handled their own management and publicity, and remained stubbornly independent at a time when many independent bands were eagerly reaching out for the major-label brass ring." The Exploding Hearts - Guitar Romantic (2003)

This is one of those albums you can't stop thinking about. I listened to it all day, every day. It made me quite happy but then I found out about the tragic end of this amazing band. Now, there's a melancholic feeling every time I listen to it which in some sort of way has grown on me. If you're a fan of rock n' roll and punk, this is a must have. My personal favorites are "Sleeping Aides and Razor Blades" and "Rumours in Town". Here's some info on the band and their tragic end.

"The Exploding Hearts were a young punk band who had released just one album – the exceptional Guitar Romantic. On this 2002 disc, the Hearts eschewed those first-album hints of brilliance and went straight there. They were like a young Clash, blasting out powerful, poppy punk with a purpose. Only their purpose wasn’t the hopeless social conditions of working-class kids in England – it was the romantic, emotionally fragile psyches of American youth today. “Throwaway Style” and “Sleeping Aides & Razor Blades” below serve as two standout examples. It was songs like these that made you wonder what might come next – a London Calling for the romantically crippled?"

"During the early 2000s the band rose to prominence in the US Pacific Northwest scene with a combination of energetic live shows and extremely well received singles. The band drew their influence from early British punk bands like The Undertones, Buzzcocks, The Jam, The Boys and The Only Ones, as well as pop acts like Nick Lowe. The Exploding Hearts led a revival of 1970s-era power pop and new wave in the Seattle and Portland area along with bands like The Briefs and the Epoxies on the then-Seattle-based Dirtnap Records. They released only one album, Guitar Romantic, during their existence as a band.

On July 20, 2003 the band was in a car accident which claimed the lives of three members. Their touring van flipped over on Interstate 5 just north of Eugene, Oregon while en route from San Francisco to Portland. Jeremy Gage and Adam Cox were thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, Matthew Fitzgerald, died at a hospital. Terry Six and band manager Rachelle Ramos both survived with minor injuries.

The band ceased to exist in the aftermath of the accident. Their popularity has continued to grow through word of mouth, however."

rest in peace

Kaka de Luxe - Las Canciones Malditas (1983)

Kaka de Luxe was a punk group formed in Madrid in 1977 which broke up in 1978. Comprised of key figures such as Carlos Berlanga, Olvido Gara, Nacho Canut, Manolo Campoamor, Enrique Sierra, Fernando Márquez and Pablo Martínez, Kaka de Luxe went on to become the predecessors of the punk rock and new wave scene of Madrid which was part of "La Movida Madrileña". "La Movida" was a sociocultural movement that took place in Madrid during the first ten years after the death of Francisco Franco.
This album is a collection of Kaka de Luxe's recordings and it was released some years after they broke up. Manolo Campoamor went on to become a plastic artist, Olvido Gara (Alaska), Carlos Berlanga and Nacho Canut formed Alaska y los Pegamoides, Fernando Márquez played in Paraíso and La Mode and Enrique Sierra became part of Radio Futura. Later on, Nacho Canut joined Paralisis Permanente, a band in which ex-Alaska y los Pegamoides members Eduardo Benavente and Ana Curra also played.

Turbonegro - Ass Cobra (1996)

These guys saved rock n' roll all on their own. Props on the parody of The Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds" album cover.
"Ass Cobra featured a move towards mid-70's punk & glam territory - in the spirit of proto punk pioneers á la The Dictators, The Ramones or late Iggy & The Stooges - plus a bit of New York Dolls' travesty thrown in. Ass Cobra paves the way harshly, with a sinister wash of cymbals, loud guitars and articulate riffs — think Poison Idea meets Alice Cooper. It is here, also, where Turbonegro developed their signature look: sailor caps, denim from head to toe, mustaches all around, and decidedly butch homoerotic accoutrements."

Flipper - Sex Bomb Baby (1988)

Abe already posted these guys' classic album "Generic Flipper", so go check that one out now! Here's another classic from these San Francisco punks. It contains singles, b-sides, and compilation tracks from 1979-1982. THIS is punk rock at it's finest.

Fugazi - The Argument

The last album by the legendary DC band before they went on hiatus. It's probably their most experimental in terms of the new sounds they incorporate, but it's also their most accessible with certain pop sensibilities.  In time it will be regarded as one of their best.

James Chance & The Contortions - Buy (1979)

A great album by one of the best New York City groups of the late '70s No Wave scene. The Contortions were led by saxophonist James Chance a.k.a. James White. His music is described as a combination of the freeform playing of Ornette Coleman with the solid funk rhythm of James Brown, though filtered through a punk rock lens. This is a true classic you little freaks.

Flipper - Album - Generic Flipper

Who better to tell us how fucked up life is than a bunch of junkies? Flipper were done with the speed and energy of the original punk bands. Like a heroin high they wanted their sound to be slowwww, and The Melvins, My War era Black Flag, Nirvana, ext.... all thank them for it.

Guitarist Ted Falconi barely plays a normal chord in the entire album. Most of it is just noisy feedback over Bruce Loose/Will Shatter's repetitive, fuzzed-out bass lines, and Steve DePace's slow drum rhythms. The sound is the perfect backdrop for their extremely bleak and hopeless yet honest lyrics.

Sex Bomb is probably the most famous song here and for the most part it's Loose screaming "Sex bomb baby, yeah!" over a fuzzy bassline, a saxophone, and noisy guitars for 7 minutes. It's enjoyable as fuck, but the true highlight here is "Life is Cheap". Musically it's similar to the others but Loose applies a harmonizing effect on his voice so it sounds as if two people were singing the song, a normal voice and screechy high pitched rat. It's such a bleak sound. He compliments it with lyrics like these:

"People cling to things to make to make their lives seem real
Crawling like bugs at some fool leader’s heels
Boasting of freedom when they’re tied down with chains
It’s time to give it up. here comes the death rain."

One of my favorite songs ever.

Flipper Still Rules OK!
