47 Tucanae (Pulsar Music)

"This beautiful globular cluster harbours 22 millisecond pulsars with periods between 2 and 8 ms. Many of them have a binary companion. We can estimate that hundreds more of these objects are in the cluster, but they may be too weak to be detected.

The first sound file
is a sequence of 16 of the known millisecond pulsars followed by them all played together.

The second file
is a sequence of the pulsar sounds as they fade due to intensity variation caused by interstellar scintillation."

Absolutely mesmerizing.

Sun Ra - Space Is The Place (1974)

"Why doesn't the earth fall? How can you walk upon it? Its the music...its the music of the earth, of the sun, of the stars, the music of yourself, vibrating... yes, you're music too. You're all instruments, everyone's supposed to be playing their part, in this vast orchestra of the cosmos."

Astro Can Caravan - Questral Places (2003) & 21st Century Drifting Episode (2005)

Ever since Astro Can Caravan was established back in 2001 in Finland, this eclectic and unconventional collective of musicians has been altering states of consciousness with its unique brand of music. This is an astounding non-conformist extension of Sun Ra's experiments with cosmic jazz. Constantly changing, at least 35 people have played in the ensemble and their live concert line-up has varied between 8 and 20 people. According to Charles Van de Kree, "ACC is an unconventional mix of large ensemble post-Sun Ra cosmic jazz, Magma-influenced Euro-fusion and Herbie Hancock/Miles Davis-styled avant-jazz funk."

Afrogalactic excursions.

This is a personal favorite of mine from the Nubian Emissary's vaunting catalog. In "Lanquidity" he directs the group to play some monstrous grooves which he subtly tweaks and stretches with improvised sections. And on the closing track he shoots us straight up to the Milky Way with his patented combination of the Arkestra vocal group and instrumental mindfuckery. Expand your sorry excuse of a nervous system with the cosmic vibrations of Herman Sonny Blount.
