Tyler, The Creator (Odd Future) - Bastard

I remember when I first heard the Slim Shady LP. I was 12 when it came out and had seen the "My Name Is" video on MTV. I asked my dad to drive me to go buy it and popped it into the car CD player. As soon as I heard: "the views and events expressed here are totally fucked" I knew it would be something different. Eminem proceeded to rap about doing all types of drugs, growing up poor, killing people, rape, suicide, and pretty much every other taboo subject you can think of. Needless to say my dad was not pleased when he heard it but it was fascinating. Who knew he would later become one of the most popular pop stars of the noughties.

Odd Future are a collective of teenage rappers and producers from L.A.. Clearly they thought the same as I did since in this release they rap about the same things but they take it a step further. Except most of them are bastards...

"Fuck a deal I just want my father's email so I can tell him how much I fucking hate him in detail".

While Em was angry you could tell he was just fucking with you in some songs. Here when Tyler, and his depressed voice, raps about cutting himself and being suicidal you almost believe it. It's half confessional, half shock, and insane. The beats are bleak and minimalist.

The best hip hop album of the year is from a teenage misfit from L.A. who raps about doing coke, hating his father, and anally raping the Virgin Mary. Then he tells us to play this in church. 'Nough said.

They also have a ton of albums on their website you can download for free so check it out: oddfuture.tumblr.com

Timeless: Miguel Atwood-Ferguson - Suite For Ma Dukes

Timeless: The Composer/Arranger Series is the name of a concert series that was created in homage to the composer/arrangers who have influenced hip-hop in the most literal and profound ways. Timeless was conceived by production house Mochilla in Los Angeles during February and March 2009 and included the performances of over 150 musicians in front of ecstatic sold out crowds. These three historic events were recorded and filmed in exacting detail with Mochilla's unmistakable style.

Timeless 2 celebrated the music of J.Dilla. Composed and arranged for a 60 piece Orchestra by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson feat. special guests Bilal, Dwele, Posdnuos, Talib Kweli and more. This premiere performance is still on the minds of many. Mixed and mastered by legendary Grammy award winning producer/mixer, Bob Power. The man behind hundreds of pop and jazz recordings for such artists as Erykah Badu, D'Angelo, De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest and more, he had also worked with Dilla while he was alive. Hiphop has never sounded or looked like this, welcome to a new era, a new scale and a new sound. Part of the proceeds of all Suite for Ma Dukes performances and recordings will go towards Maureen "Ma Dukes" Yancey and the heirs to the Dilla Estate.

Big Pooh - Sleepers

rapper big pooh, such a nice name for a rapper. the beats in this album are heavily banging and the mcs are dope. I strongly recommend this album if you are heavily into neck breaking beats. this is an old 2005 production but still a classic in its own right.

Madlib - Shades Of Blue

this is a classic. i was wondering why this hasn't been uploaded to the chasm lovers union. one of Madlib`s finest works, remixing many classic tunes from the Blue Note Records catalog in their "funky blue note" era. it`s something that any ear can digest with ease. Blue Note gave all the master tracks to Madlib and gave him permission to do whatever he wanted to do, so obviously he went all beat-tastik on this shit and it was freaking worth it. Blue Note released this album in their label, something that no hip hop producer was ever offered. viva le Madlib. viva le beats.

Aesop Rock & EL-P

I can't think of one without the other, because they:
A. collaborate on each others work,
B. They are prime examples of a paradox known as "Intelligent Hip Hop"
C. They're cool as shit.

EL-P, also known as El Producto is a renown NYC Hip Hop rapper & producer which jump-started the label Def Jux which included Cannibal Ox. He started off as a member of the infamous group Company Flow.

Fantastic Damage

"El-P's style can be characterized by his dense, aggressive, and verbose attacks, which include notable use of metaphor, science fiction and fantasy themes and references, and associative word play. Critic Steve Huey describes him as "one of the most technically gifted MCs of his time, spitting out near-impossible phrases and rhythmic variations that simply leave the listener's head spinning."

I'll sleep when you're dead.

Aesop Rock was one of the first acts signed to the Def Jux label. Oft compared to lyrical masters like Kool Keith. He also has Science Fiction influence and a dumbfoundingly fast delivery. Just check out 2:43 in the next video and you'll know what I mean.

Labor Days.

"It’s probably because it’s not the most accessible music in the world. It may pose a slight challenge to the listener beyond your average pop song. I'm no genius by a long shot, but these songs are not nonsensical, that's pretty preposterous. I'd have to be a genius to pull this many nonsensical records over people's eyes. It's not exactly fast food but when people pretend I'm just spewing non-sequiturs and gibberish I can’t help but think they simply haven’t listened and are regurgitating some rumor they’ve heard about me. Even if it's not laid out in perfect sentences—is any rap?—you’d have to be an idiot to not at least grasp a few things from these songs. Or have had no interest in pulling anything from them in the first place."

None Shall Pass.

V/A - Hip Hop Dock-Trine Vol.1

Y`all have heard of The Boondocks (if not, please watch some episodes, its really really good).
the soundtrack has some great ass shit. hip hop at its finest with apperances by Asheru (he produced the theme for the first season [el sonido campeon], which is a better beat that the theme from the second season), Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, Method Man, Ghostface Killah, MF Doom, Little Brother, Pete Rock, Danger Doom, Dead Prez, The Roots.... damn, that lineup probably made you shit your pants. Anyway, it also has some funny audio clips from a lot of the episodes, including a cameo by Sway. thats right, Sway, and his inexplicable head-wrap.
Anyway, if you down with hip hop, download this shit. its fucking great.

Gangstaliscious..... Resurrection!

Spank Rock - YoYoYoYoYo

One of my favorite hip hop albums in recent years. Spank Rock bust out the party rap (influenced heavily by Baltimore club music) in full effect all while maintaining an underground vibe as well. Naeem Juwan's lyrics are hilarious and ironically raunchy mainly inspired by 2 Live Crew (ex. the chorus of "Coke & wet, bitch, guns, nigga, holla!" on the appropriately titled "Coke & Wet") while XXXChange's production is one of the true highlights of the record. The classically trained producer throws out some incredibly clever beats that never sound repetitive or cliched. Easily one of the best producers right now. Check out their live show as well if you want to have a good time.

Diplo & Santogold - Top Ranking

Forget the original Santogold album. This is a million times better. Diplo continues the tradition of turning everything he touches to fucking gold. On this jamaican music inspired 75 minute, massive mixtape he blazes through everything you can imagine. Dub, r&b, new wave, rocksteady, reggae, dancehall, grime, indie, hip hop, reggaeton, electronic, miami bass, soul, even punk with a barrage of samples ranging from Dead Kennedys, Kraftwerk, Dead Boys to Street Fighter sounds and mashups ala Hollertronix.

Highlights include the track where Cutty Ranks rhymes like a madman with the bass riff from Black Flag's "Six Pack" over a reggaeton beat. There's also the Mumdance remix of Creator where Jammer and friends turn Switch's beat(one of the best of 08') into a grime-fest complete with a Soulja Boy sample in between. The track with Warrior Queen destroying The Clash's Ghetto Defendant over grimy beats and the Santogold/Panda Bear mashup are also highlights.

Diplo throws in songs from Aretha Franklin, Devo, and classic tracks from Desmond Dekker, Barrington Levy, and Tony Matterhorn into the mix as well. If all that weren't enough there are also covers of The Clash's Guns of Brixton (renamed Guns of Brooklyn) and Bad Brains'  Right Brigade.

Handsome Boy Modeling School - So How's Your Girl...

Classic collaboration between two hip hop masters, Dan the Automator and Prince Paul. Also has guest appearances by: Dj Shadow, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, Kid Koala, El-P, ext...

Dizzee Rascal - Boy in the Corner

This album came out when Dizzee was 18 ("I Luv U" was recorded when he was 16). Think about what the fuck you had accomplished by 18 and be ashamed. Still the best grime album ever and a modern classic.
