Halloween Leftovers 2: A Marathon

October has come and gone again. Last November 1st I looked at the pile of leftover movies I had and came up with an idea. A marathon of Halloween leftovers. Films I wanted to watch in October but wasn't able to get to. To make it easier on myself when it came to picking the films I came up with some guidelines. The films would be ones I'd never seen and had to be from within the last five to six years. Like last year I had a couple days off during the week. This is a record of that marathon. Transcribed from my rambling notes. Detailing a descent into madness.

The Final Girls (2015)

A fun and surprisingly heartfelt homage to '80's slasher films. I liked how they used the idea of being trapped in a film to almost Groundhog Day effect. There were a couple very emotional scenes that really surprised me. This one had a fantastic cast. The final battle was really well done. A good start to the marathon.

WolfCop (2014)

WolfCop was a howler. Yeah I said it. A fun, gory little film that would make a really cool TV show. Loved the dude that played WolfCop. He was a cross of Wolverine and Uncle Red from Silver Bullet.

 Willow Creek (2013)

Boring. It's Blair Witch with just the talk and no chills. This found footage film should have stayed lost.

Mischief Night (2014)

Entertaining little slasher film. Imagine if Laurie Strode was a little off in the head. And then have her fall in love with Micheal Myers. That's basically the plot. Malcolm McDowell absolutely steals the film in his two scenes.

Honeyspider (2014)

This was a cool little slasher. It felt like a cross between The House of The Devil and a Rob Zombie film. This not a bad thing. Great Halloween atmosphere in this one.

See No Evil 2 (2014)

Solid slasher from the Soska sisters. Kane makes for a good movie maniac. The dude is huge. Danielle Harris and Katharine Isabelle in a movie together. Why has this not happened before now?

The Demolisher (2015)

Cool mix of art house film and old school vigilante flicks. There's been a trend lately of having retro synth scores in horror films. The score here follows in that trend. It's particularly good. Reminding me of an early '80's John Carpenter score.

Bunni (2013)

Very low budget slasher. The acting is pretty cheesy, but the killer has a cool, unique look.

The Moth Diaries (2011)

From the director of American Psycho Mary Harron. Like that film this one plays with viewer perceptions. We're never quite sure if there's something supernatural or if it's just in the main character's mind. I've always had a thing for films set at all girls schools. It's an interesting setting. Plus I'm a pervert. Model Lily Cole was great as the strange new girl at school.

From the Dark (2014)

Interesting little Irish vampire film. A young couple trapped at night in a farmhouse with a newly awakened vampire on the prowl. Has a few nice creepy moments.

The Neon Dead (2015)

This was a cool, very colorful, very low budget horror film. The story is fun. The three leads are clearly having a good time. The whole thing is very imaginative. And the monster designs are really sweet. Highly recommended.

This was a fun marathon. This year's selection had less stinkers then last year's movies. Hopefully next year I can do a third one.

Halloween Leftovers: A Marathon

For me October is one long horror movie marathon ending in a big blow out on the 31st. My viewing usually consists old favorites and some new films. No matter how much I try I'm never able to get to everything I want to. This November 1st I looked at the pile of left over movies and had an idea. A marathon of Halloween leftovers. To make it easier on myself when it came to picking the films I came up with some guidelines. The films would be ones I'd never seen and had to be from within the last five to six years. With two days off during the week I planned to start the marathon after work. And then continue over the next two days. So, how'd it turn out? Read on for the lowdown.

247°F (2011)

Based on a true story? Really more of a thriller then a horror film. But any film with a sweaty underwear clad Scout Taylor-Compton is okay in my book. For the ladies there's two equally sweaty underwear clad beefcakes about. Turns out the true part of the story featured 100% less dead people.

Alyce Kills (2011)

Off the rails on a crazy train. That's this film in a nutshell. Even the damn bartender is insane. All the characters are great though. Some are vile but still interesting. Never tell your friend they have a wet vagina when your drunk on a roof. It's Kurtains for ya!

V/H/S: Viral (2014)

I really loved the first two V/H/S films. This one was M/E/H to the extreme. Other then the story concerning a magician and his cursed robe everything falls flat on it's analog face. Way too much CGI gore effects in this one.

The Poltergeist of Borley Forest (2013)

Needs less Borley Forest and more Broly The Legendary Super Saiyan. That's all I could think of watching this. I wish Broly would show up and destroy the damn forest.

Lost After Dark (2014)

Another retro slasher deal. They got the fashions right. The '80's style music is a nice touch as well. Robert Patrick was the standout here. He should have been the hero. Nice touch with the supposed Final Girl. The metal chick was cool. Wish there was more of her. Too bad the kills are boring. The killer is no great shakes himself. He looks like a grumpy Alan Moore.

Caesar and Otto's Paranormal Halloween (2015)

Had no idea there was a whole series of films about Caesar and half brother Otto. I was surprised just how funny this was. The lovely Tiffany Shepis plays a neighbor of the brothers. Damn. If only she was my neighbor. The Halloween homage with a fake Dr. Phill was a highlight.

The Coven (2015)

This was a horror film? Seriously? Was this made for The Family Channel? Damn the accents are so think I couldn't tell what any of the girls were saying.

Run, Hide, Die (2012)

No running. Very little hiding. Couldn't wait for the dying. A whole lot of sleeping.

Inner Demons (2014)

Oh no. Found Footage film. Wait it's not that bad. Goth chick! That's at least a couple extra points in my book. Wow, actually cared about the main characters. Damn bleak ending.

We Are Still Here (2015)

The marathon ended on a high note. House of The Devil mixed with House by the Cemetery. With a little The Fog thrown in. Loved the retro setting of this one. To prove how '70's this one there's even a J&B sighting. Burnt pissed off ghosts are not to be messed with. Lisa Marie still has it going on. You where a fool to dump her Tim Burton.

This was the most fun I've had with a movie marathon in some time. Alyce Kills, Inner Demons and We Are Still Here where all winners. Run, Hide, Die and The Coven where some Hostel like torture. Actually can't wait try this again sometime.

'Tis the Season for Horror

Nothing say Christmas like a few maniacs, a traumatized childhood or two and lots of knives. So between all the gift giving and present openings, I'm going to indulge in a X-mas themed marathon.

So far I've watched...

Such a weird little film. I love it immensely and hope someday it gets the deluxe DVD treatment. A creepy old mansion, an escaped mental patient, sepia flashbacks and a mute  John Carradine, ringing a bell, What's not to love?

Yuletide count: We get a Christmas tree, some holiday decorations and lights, a few gifts getting wrapped, a bit of snow and a very creepy rendition of silent night.

Aldo Lado's Last House riff is equal parts classy and sleazy.  If you want a holiday film that's the complete opposite of  A Christmas Story, well you can't go wrong with this epic of Italian nastiness.

Yuletide count:  One beat up Santa, a groovy looking Christmas tree and a few presents.

Speaking of sleazy, they don't come much sleazier then this. Caroline Munro shows up as herself and belts out a tune. A poor St. Nick get's his wang shorted. And in my favorite scene some punks harass a poor Santa on a bike.

Yuletide count:  Lots of Christmas cheer here. Many dead Santa's, lots of decorations and one mean present.

Big dumb fun. This film has become a holiday staple for me in the last couple of years. Where else can you witness Bill Goldberg slaughter Chris Kattan and James Caan! Plus Dave Thomas cracks me up as the strip club going Pastor Timmons.

Yuletide count: One big pissed off Santa and some killer reindeer. A bunch of holiday decorations and trees. And one massacred bunch of carolers.

Here's a remake I dig. The script is witty at times. The girl's are hot. The gore's not bad. And the film looks slick. Though I feel the film gives us way too much back story on Billy and Agnes. The flashbacks are scattered about in a way that derails the action.

Yuletide count: Lots of Christmas cheer on hand. Roaring fires, egg nog, Christmas trees aplenty, tons of lights and one dead Santa.

Bob Clark's other Christmas masterpiece. Of course I don't have to tell you about this one, it's a classic. What I will say about is that's it's atmosphere is damn near perfect. Clark captures the bleakness of winter in such a way that you feel the chill of the wind and hear the crunch of snow without even being there.

Yuletide count: We have a Santa with a white guy afro. Some drunken Christmas party antics. Presents and decorations galore. and one nice old tree.

Naughty! Punish! My second favorite Christmas movie of all time.

Yuletide count: One low key Christmas party, strangulation with lights, A few Christmas trees and one very uncomfortable session of sitting on Santa's lap.

Renting a copy of this many years ago I was expecting to get a sleazy good slasher outing like Silent Night, Deadly Night. What I got instead was disappointment. Were was all the killing? Nothing freaking happened for half the movie and then when it did, it didn't last long. Most of the film was about this poor sod named Harry who lives and breathes Christmas melting down till he finally snaps. What a freaking bummer. A couple years ago a friend of mine rented a couple of DVDs and invited me over. Well the first one he popped in was Christmas Evil! What a difference ten years makes. My tastes had matured. Not only could I enjoy the film for what it was, but for what it was doing. It's a charming film that affirms Christmas time, while at the same time showing how it can be perverted. It's a great Christmas film. It's become mandatory yuletide viewing for me and my favorite Christmas movie.

Yuletide count: A bunch of Santa's, lots and I mean lots of Christmas decorations, presents, trees and Santa's groovy '80's van.

Happy Holidays!

Slashing me, slashing you (ah-haa)

I'd been thinking about a Slasher marathon for awhile know and...Damn! Someone beat me to it! How can you top awesome like that? You can't, but you can sit back, chill with some cool Slasher films and enjoy the ride.

So this weekend as summer comes to a close I'm hanging out with maniacs and scantily clad coeds for a long weekend of slasher hijinks. My criteria for this is that the films have to fall in between (1978) to (1996), why you may ask? Well, because I'm goofy like that. That and those are the years that Halloween and Scream came out. Also none of the big boys are invited to this party.  Myers, Voorhees, Krueger and Leatherface aren't welcome. But your Prom Nights and your Slumber Party Massacres are fine though.

The final body count is...Ten films

The Last Slumber Party (1988)
Nightmare (1981)
Sorority House Massacre (1987)
The Slumber Party Massacre (1982)
Night Screams (1988)
Cheerleader Camp (1988)
Camp Fear (1991)
Happy Hell Night (1992)
Future-Kill (1985)
Doom Asylum (1987)

And yes I like ABBA dammit!

Wolfman's got nards!

It's really been that long since my first werewolf marathon. Wow 2009? Well time to fix that it's been too long since it got hairy around here. Wait that doesn't sound too good now does it? Screw it here's Ozzy because it's time my friends to

I'm going to kick it off in a couple of minutes with Werewolf in a Girls' Dormitory, from there it's anybody's ballgame. I've got a whole stack of films in the Lycan variety for the long weekend.

My offical drink for this undertaking will be Mountain Dew Pitch Black! And the snack? Why it's taco flavored Doritos. Not exactly werewolf inspired but, I'm not going to sit here and chew on someone's leg so it'll have to do.

Enter The Fist of The Fat Dragon

A couple of months ago I was going through a bunch of my unwatched DVDs . I had accumulated quite a bit of stuff featuring a Mr. Sammo Hung. So why not have a marathon of some of his stuff. Most of it was stuff I was watching for the first time with some old favorites thrown into the mix for safeties sake.

Sammo Hung is perfectly adept at playing everything from an affable everyman to a complete badass. I think my first exposure to Sammo besides Enter The Dragon was Meals On Wheels. Of course I didn't even know who Sammo was when I first watched Enter The Dragon till years later. It took awhile but Sammo grew on me. For awhile it was all about Jackie Chan and later Chow Yun-Fat as I'm sure it was for many people when they first got into the Hong Kong cinema explosion of the '90's.

Don't Give A Damn (1995)

“If possible, I would fart on her face.”

My first film of the marathon and a first time viewing. Sammo plays the usual tough guy cop here. His rival is a crazy customs cop played by Yuen Biao. The two cops are trying to stop a large drug shipment. Mix in Sammo's boss played by Takeshi Kaneshiro, in a role intended Jackie Chan. A couple of hot girls and some antics at the police station. Plus two rival gangs who are battling for the drugs as well. All in all it's a fairly generic setup for a buddy film. The action is decent enough. The comedy on the other hand is a mostly poor. There's also some extremely offensive politically incorrect "humor" involving Takeshi Kaneshiro and Yuen Biao in blackface that nearly derails the whole film. Besides that unforgeable bit the quality of the picture and the audio of the copy I watched was poor. Sure that's not the film's fault, but it did subtract greatly from the viewing experience.

Well the marathon is off to a rocky start. Hopefully the next flick will pick things up a bit because Don't Give A Damn made me not give a damn.

Island of Fire (1990)

A prison film with an all-star ensemble cast. Sammo plays the part of a con who's main goal is to break out so he can see his son. While Sammo doesn't get to kick any ass here he turns in a fairly good dramatic performance. Tony Leung plays a cop who goes undercover as a prisoner. He's investigating why supposedly executed criminals are turning up alive on the streets committing murder. Jackie Chan turns up in jail for accidentally killing crime boss Andy Lau's brother. After a couple attempts on Jackie's life, Lau gets himself sent there to take out Jackie himself. I guess he believes in the whole if you want a job done right thing. Anyway the other major star in the prison is Jimmy Wang Yu as some sort of crime boss. After a lot of prison clichés and some Cool Hand Luke references we eventually get to the big mystery of what's going on at the prison. An entertaining enough flick, as long as you go in not expecting it to feature a lot of Jackie and Sammo. Jackie gets a couple of good fight scenes and Sammo gets in on the action during the climax. Good for an undemanding Saturday afternoon viewing.

Return of the Secret Rivals (1981)

Ah, a little old school Sammo kung fu action. Sammo plays um....a dude named Dirty Guy. See Dirty is no pervert, no he got that name on account of his unwashed/diseased head. Which I have to say is truly a sight to see. Dirty helps some rebels fight against some evil and incompetent ruler dude. That's really all there is to the story. And that part of it doesn't really kick in for some time. Before that we're "treated" to lots and lots of antics involving Dirty pissing off Carter Wong. See Wong is Sammo's rival in some prophecy about being the next ruler and he's also the villain of the film. The always wonderful Dean Shek is under-used here as Wong's aide. He turns up from time to time for his usual brand of comic goofiness. But it's all too brief. There's a scene so groan inducing here that involves Dirty calling on a heard of cows to fight off a squad of troops. That scene had me wanting to hit eject. Overall a somewhat lighthearted Kung fu farce. A few good fights help liven up the sometimes slow moving story.

Kung Fu Cult Master (1993)

Wow! Wall to wall insanity! Crazy wire fu! Sammo in as a white haired old master! Gorgeous Chingmy Yau! Jet Li being Jet Li and there's a vampire too! This is the type of Hong Kong film I miss. Insane action set pieces and a willingness to throw reality out the door. At times the film felt like a live action Dragon Ball episode. There where so many characters that sometimes the film got a little confusing as to who the good guys and bad guys where. Plus the story feels a tad unfinished. Like it's the 2nd film in a larger series. Doing a little digging I found that apparently it was the first film in a proposed trilogy. It's a shame because the end of the film really leaves you hanging.

The King Swindler (1993)

Ugh! Never have I had to sit though such mind numbing crap. The "story" (HA!)  revolves around Sammo's character who is a gambler/fighter and all around terrible parent. He ends up taking a powder in prison and leaves his bratty kid with a police woman and her young daughter. What follows next is that hours seem like days as the film inflicts all sorts of  "cute" antics on us from the kids. After awhile Sammo returns from prison, beats up some people, then we're "treated" to a heart warming ending and I took the noose from around my next and stepped down from the chair and went to bed. Crying myself to sleep in a fetal position.

Well the next morning I awoke and King Swindler was nothing but a memory. A very painful and shameful memory. And it was on to the next film.

My Lucky Stars (1985)

My Lucky Stars is the amazing story of a group of courageous men out to save their friend and redeem their souls in the process. Muscles (Jackie Chan) is on the trail of a corrupt Hong Kong cop. With the help of his partner Ricky (Yuen Biao) they've tracked him to an amusement park in Japan. Some sort of Ninja clan shows up (Amusement park clan perhaps?) and Ricky is captured after a brief battle. Jackie....um Muscles needs help to get his partner out. So he gets his boss to recruit his old buddy Kidstuff (Sammo) and his gang of crooks to help out. Seems Kidstuff and the gang don't trust Muscles now that he's become a cop. But the cops pull a frame job on the gang, implicating them in a bank robbery. So they agree to help in order to clear their names. Then though the use of jokes about diarrhea and how best to feel up a woman when your tied to her we learn something about these brave men and ourselves. That and we get treated to a kick ass climax in a funhouse. A highly recommend romp.

Shanghai Express (1986)

This film is a little bit of everything. Western. Comedy. Kung Fu. Adventure film. All wrapped up in an all-star cast. Your never quite certain when or where the story takes place.  The plot concerns a train called The Millionaire's Express. Sammo plays a bandit who returns to his home town after several years. He's got a bad rep around town for his antics. He attempts to waylay the train there in hopes of revitalizing the town's failing economy and making things right. There are others with various reasons for being there as well. Including three Japanese Samurai after some ancient parchment. A bandit army out to pilfer the train and a gang of bungling crooks who used to be the town's police force. There's tons of slapstick comedy and various visual gags. A lot of it is funny, but a few gags will leave you just shaking your head. That said though you will be entertained and by the time the film reaches the final twenty minute battle royal you'll be on edge of your seat as one crazy stunt follows another.

The Gambling Ghost (1991)

Here's a film that for what ever reason I just love. I shouldn't. It's all sorts of dumb. But damn it if it just doesn't charm the pants off of you. Sammo plays three different generations in the same family. The father and his no good gambling son and the ghost of the grandfather as well. Seems old gramps was a famous gambler who died under mysterious circumstances. His ghost comes back to not only help his grandson cheat at gambling but to get revenge on the one that double crossed and murdered him. Unlike King Swindler the zaniness and overall lack of action don't hurt the film. It's just a fun time that never feels forced or too cute for it's own good.

Eastern Condors (1987)

The Dirty Dozen done Hong Kong style. A total action blast and a great way to wrap up the marathon. It's often considered one of Sammo's best films. It's definitely one of my personal favorites from his filmography. A group of  Chinese-American soldiers who also happen to be convicts and or prisoners of war are given a chance at winning their freedom. If they can slip into Vietnam and blow up an abandoned U.S. ammo storehouse they'll all receive pardons. The tone is a bit darker then the majority of Sammo's films. The action is great, both hand to hand stuff and gun battles. The final battle in the abandoned ammo is a knock out.

Not a bad marathon. There were a few clunkers in there to be sure. King Swindler I'm looking at you! But overall I really enjoyed the heck out of the line up for the most part. And the thing is I barely scratched the surface of Sammo's amazing filmography.

Friday night giallo

Last Friday night I got home from work and decided that this night it would be a little different. I hadn't had a movie marathon night in some time. The time seemed right. Now the what would it be? I narrowed it down to three possible choices. Sergio Martino, Lucio Fulci or a giallo marathon? I had a stack of unseen films for all three. After a little internal debate, I decided on a giallo themed night. But it didn't mean I couldn't still kick it off with some Sergio Martino.

All the Colors of the Dark (1972)

"Strange men have been following women since the Stone Age, Jane."

I've never seen this Sergio Martino giallo before. Ahhh Edwige Fenech. Is there anyone better to have in a giallo. she plays Jane, who's having freaky nightmares about her mom's murder. Her love-in lover Richard (giallo great George Hilton) thinks it has to do with jane's recent miscarriage. She keeps seeing her mom's killer (Ivan Rassimov) everywhere she goes. Her sister Barbara (Nieves Navarro aka Susan Scott) works for a psychiatrist that Jane is seeing. But Richard thinks that's all crap. Jane meets a new tenant in her building, Mary (Marina Malfatti) who suggests a different approach to curing her. Black magic. Soon Jane and Mary are hanging with a satanic cult! One cup of dog blood later Jane is boffing the satanic high priest (Julian Ugarte). The next day she wakes up thinking the Black Mass was just a dream. Till she finds the cult's symbol on her arm. Jane starts having visions of the future that come true. She also starts to suspect everyone around her is involved in the cult. Is everyone out to get Jane or is she plain bonkers.

I love the mix of the typical giallo elements with the London setting and the satanic cult plot. It felt like an Italian made Hammer film. Fenech, Martino, Hilton, Rassimov and brillant score by Bruno Nicolai make this is a giallo fan's wet dream! Add to that the gorgeous Malfatti and Scott, it's near perfection. Martino does a great job of cutting back and forth between fantasy and reality simply and effectively. He packs each scene with energy and beauty. You never feel bored as his camera is always in motion. One of Martino's most satisfying gialli and a great way to kick off the night.

Murder Mansion (1972)

"I just want to get to the bottom of this God damn mystery!"

Beautiful heiress, Elsa (Analía Gadé), traveling to meeting her hubby crashes her car near an old cemetery. Investigating the cemetery Elsa is menaced by two ghostly apportions. She screams her head off. She's heard by a young couple, Fred (Andre Resino) and Laura (Anna Lisa Nardi), who come to her aid but find no trace of the ghosts. After some wandering in the fog out threesome find themselves outside a large mansion. they knock on the door and Mr Porter who previously that day nearly ran Fred down and had tried to grope Laura. Also there with him are Mr and Mrs Tremont (friends of Elsa, who were involved in a car accident in the fog with Mr Porter)...plus the owner of the house, Marta (Evelyn Stewart). She explains too all her guests that they'd better stay there for the night, since the fog is so bad. Just to put her guests at ease she relates to them the story of her Aunt, a self-proclaimed witch who with her chauffeur died in 1942. She also mentions how fear of vampires have kept the locals away. So after that they settle down for a good nights sleep. Things begin to heat up. Sort of. People wander around and then some start dying. Who or what stalks the halls of the mansion?

A giallo that's equal parts Scooby Doo and Old Dark House film. I really dug this film. I doesn't do anything amazing but it held my interest and I had fun with it. The plot behind everything is very ridiculous, something involving incest and inheritance. It's convoluted, but sort of fits the Scooby Doo atmosphere of this film. If it wasn't for those melding kids...

I was starting to get tired, but I felt I could squeeze one or two more in. Something short. So I picked...

The French Sex Murders (1972)

"A case like you should be considered psychpathological ... you depraved filthy pig!"

It starts with someone falling off the Eiffel tower. The we flashback a few days and meet Antoine Gottvalles, a violent schizophrenic who may have killed a prostitute. Humprey Bogart clone Inspector Pontaine (Robert Sacchi) hunts him down and brings him to justice. During the trial Gottvalles swears his innocence and swears revenge on those that accused him. "...all that condemned me will die violently!". Gottvalles escapes from custody and, after stealing a motorcycle, gets into an accident were he loses his head! Pretty soon the people he ‘cursed’ start dying and I start snoozing.

This is my second time watching this sucker and it didn't not get any better! Inspector Bogart, why do you hate me so. This film drags on and on, once in awhile throwing some nudity or poorly staged murder at the viewer. I now believe in movies making one violent because by the time this was over I wanted to hit someone in the face! Damn it!

Hopefully the next film would end the night on a high note...or not.

Slaughter Hotel (1971)

"Your desire to make love is excessive. Now go take a shower."

A high class sanitarium located somewhere in Europe, where the only patients, are scantily clad Euro-babes. Run by Professor Dorian (John Karlsen) and Dr. Clay (A wild looking Klaus Kinski). Their charges run the gamut, from nymphomaniacs to suicide risks. After what seems like hours a masked figure in a long black cloak shows up and starts killing people with weapons from the sanitarium's well stocked armory!

Man this is one hell of a sleazy movie. It's even sleazier then I remembered. Back in the days of VHS I rented this under the title Asylum Erotica! It appears that the video tape version of it was heavily edited. I've never see so much female self-gratification on screen...ever! Kinski is somewhat restrained here but still fun to watch. Rosalba Neri as the resident nymphomaniac is incredibly hot. If there's one reason to watch this film it's her. But I'll never understand why they keep all those deadly weapons are a bunch of mental patients. Not great by any means but fun.

Well I wish the night could have ended better but I was entertained for most of it. If it wasn't for that damn Inspector Bogart!
