RIP Jack Ketchum

Horror sadly lost ones it's greats today. Ketchum had a way of writing stripped down, brutal and often beautiful prose. Cover was the first of his novels I read. A mix of First Blood and backwoods horror. It was to use a cliche: A page turner. Last year I read Old Flames/Right to Life. Both novellas, especially Right to Life had their share of violent moments but Right to Life had some equally touching moments involving a cat, who became one of the main characters. A talent and a man that can never be replicated.

The great Wal-Mart book haul

Browsing the rather diminished Mart book section Friday night I was surprised to find crammed between the teen vampire section and the magazines a slew of books for a buck 99. Interspersed amongst romance novels about Vikings and Zane Grey westerns was a crap load of horror novels! I made off with a few Jack Ketchum books (The Lost, Old Flames, Cover, and Joyride.), Friday Night in the Beast House by Richard Laymon and The 5th Witch by Graham Masterton. All in all a good day for my bookshelf.
