Some January finishes and WIP

This little quilt is made out of scraps which I almost discarded. Now it is finished, it looks quite cheerful and I'm happy I saved the little squares.

I used my Bernina 807, from the seventies, for it.  I found this sewing machine once in a thrift store. It came in its original red case, compleet with all the assessors. After cleaning and replacing the bobbin winder spool, it is sewing great.

Facts:
Machine sewn and quilted.
Size: 80cm by 87cm (31,5 by 34 inches)
Fabrics all cotton, Batting: wool

This is a little pouch with a crocheted edge. The outside fabric is made of an antique French piece of fabric I bought in Nantes  few years ago. It was just the right size.

Inside fabrics are new and thrift store fabrics.

The crocheted edge is made with a perle cotton number 5. ctually I embroidered all my Teddy bear noises with this;)

In the meantime I'm working with all the hexagons made out of scraps I told you about in my previous post. This is the middle part....

which is growing into this. The next rows will be turning from light yellow into brighter yellow. The inspiration for this came from an old Dutch quilt which is in the open air museum in Arnhem .

Have a nice weekend,

All my 1718 blocks assembled, top is ready!

This weekend I finished sewing my '1718 coverlet replica top'. I was very excited, happy and at the same time a bit melancholic that this was over. It sounds strange but sometimes I'm happy when a project is finished and another time it feels a bit sad to end 'a journey'.

Last week I was busy finishing the last blocks, like these rabbits and geese.

Sewing all the blocks into big parts....

 Making the last corner blocks...

Finally it started to come together.....

My allotment is so overgrown....

There is not much space for laying out the top!

 Onto a bigger space...

Lizzy helped showing the top, as usual.

Now it is time to finish it. I wanted to make a coverlet as is the original one. The thing is I used so many different fabrics as linen, upholstery, old trousers (slacks) en skirts, Japanese woven fabrics, 50 % linen/50% silk, hand dyed fabrics by my friend Teri and many linen and scraps by Margret Behrends-Kohl , shot cottons, an antique striped sheet. All these differnt fabrics made the top heavy and vary in thickness. I don't want to leave it unquilted. This week I hope to find a backing fabric and make a quilt sandwich. To be continued!

If you want to try to make this coverlet yourself: you can find the book here;)

My Red and white Irish chain is finished!!!

My first big red and white quilt is finished!!!!!! It is entirely made out of scraps, all saved during lots of years. Some of them are even from the 80ties like that little bear.

The striped fabric from the back of the quilt is folded to the front to form a binding.

The pattern  I used is from Bonny Hunter, from her book : Adventures with leaders and enders. I changed the 'white' part. In the pattern it is only made out of one big piece, while I chose to use small  squares ( 2"by 2") throughout the whole quilt.

The back of the quilt, contains 2 different fabrics in red and white. The fabric in the middle is framed by the striped fabric. The quilt is machine quilted on my home sewing machine, just simple stripes.

The ducks are also from the 80ties, like the bears.

The quilt is made to use on our big bed so no hanging sleeve needed, it is just going to be a utility quilt.

Facts:
Size: 2.35m by 2.35m (approx. 92" by 92")
3600 squares
patched and quilted by my home sewing machine
batting: a heavy 100% cotton batting layer, normally used for covering a mattress ( in Dutch called: molton)
the weight of the quilt: 4 kg, yes it is heavy!

Have a nice day,

Groetjes
