Masterclass Amish Quilting

Afgelopen 2 dagen was ik helemaal in de ban van het Amish quilten bij  Quiltwinkel de Quiltster  van Marcha in Dreischor, Zeeland. Geheel onverwachts gaf ik me vlak voor het weekend nog op voor deze  twee daagse workshop. Ik had er al veel eerder naar gekeken en kon de verleiding niet weer staan toen ik zag dat er nog plekken over waren.
De masterclass werd gegeven door Alexia Rosfelder ( ze woont vlakbij St. Marie aux Mines waar de Amish mensen oorspronkelijk vandaan komen). Zij leerde het quilten van Esther Miller, een dame die uit Amerika komt, in Berlijn woont en Amish is. Deze quilt hieboven is gemaakt door Alexia.

Last two days I was doing a masterclass Amish quilting at the quiltshop: de Quiltster. Marcha is the owner and the shop is situated in a beautiful village Dreischor (the Netherlands in the south west part). I liked doing this masterclass for quite some time but just before this weekend I filled in the form to participate. 
The masterclass is given by Alexia Rosfelder  (she lives close to St. Marie aux Mines, where the Amish people originally came from). She learned quilting from Esther Miller, an American lady who lives in Berlin now and is Amish. The quilt above is made by Alexia.

Dit was ook belangrijk: een porseleinen vingerhoed voor onze linkerhand.

This is an important tool too: a porcelain thimble we need for our left hand.

Alexia legt héél geduldig uit ( in goed Engels) en doet het vele malen voor. Ze is een zeer goede lerares en kon ons ook veel vertellen over de geschiedenis van de Amish mensen en over hun leven nu. Midden achter staat Wilma (met blog) die ik hier ontmoette.  Laten we nou in dezelfde B&B slapen, dat was gezellig!

Alexia is very, very patient when she explains the technique (in good English) and shows us many times how to do it. She is a very good teacher and also told us a lot about the history of the Amish people and their life today. Wilma (with blog) ,one of the ladies who I met this day, was at my class as you can see in the middle of the photo. We discovered that we slept at the same B&B  and we had a very good time together!

 Na elke uitleg gaan we het zelf proberen. We zijn met een groep van 7 aardige dames en werken aan frames net zoals de Amish vrouwen doen.

 After each explanation we have to try ourselves. We have a group of 7 nice ladies and have to work at frames like the Amish ladies do. 

Er wordt vanzelf ook gepraat en gelachen. Sommige van ons moesten wel een paar uur rijden maar dat hadden we er graag voor over.

And apart from hard work we talked and had fun. Some of us had to drive a long way to get there but it was worth it.

Halverwege werden mijn steekjes wel kleiner maar ik moet nog veel, héél véél oefenen.

In the meanwhile my stitches were getting smaller but I have to practice a lot more.

Tussendoor kregen we regelmatig koffie, thee, allerlei soorten gebak en heelijke lunches, verzorgt door de zus van Marcha: Vera eigenaresse van Kadoshoppie

Between classes we had coffee, tea, lots of cakes and lovely lunches, taken care of by Marcha's sister Vera owner of  Kadoshoppie .

Ik keek mijn ogen uit...ik spaarde al het een en ander van dit servies en kon ook niet met lege handen naar huis.

There was much of this wonderful tableware, I could not go home without buying some of it. It is difficult not to collect the tableware with all those different decorations.

's Nachts sliepen Wilma en ik hier achter dit huis (uit 1520!) waarin de eigenaren van het B&B Lekker bij Maas , wonen.

Alexia laat ons zien hoe je quilt met een speciale porseleinen vingerhoed onder de quilt, die hand zit verstopt natuurlijk.

Gelukkig was er genoeg tijd om rond te kijken in de quiltwinkel (klik voor foto's daar) Ik kocht natuurlijk Zeeuwse schortenstof en nog meer andere mooie stoffen. Dan nog een koffiebekertje en een paar kleintjes waarin een speldenkussentje komt ( ook voor een cadeautje).

I was very lucky to have enough time to look around in the Quiltshop (click for pictures). I bought original apron fabric from the region we were in (it is the black and white, woven, fabric on the bottom of the pile).
I also bought the coffee cup and some small ones to make a pincushion in (for presents).

Aan het einde van dag twee, liet Alexia (rechts op de foto) ons zien hoe je een quiltframe maakt terwijl ze de frames uit elkaar haalde. Ze gaf ons allemaal ons eigen gequilte stuk mee naar huis. En hier zie je ons op de foto...beetje moe maar voldaan met een ervaring rijker in de winkel van Marcha ( tweede van rechts, bovenste rij)! At the end of the day Alexia (at the right) even showed us how to make a quilting frame while she took the frames apart to give us our own part of the quilt. Here we are....looking a bit tired but very happy with our experience in Marcha's (second from the right in the top row) shop. Soms krijg ik 'hulp'....

Some times I get help....

Als ik alles aan elkaar zet ziet het er zo uit, een berg stof en hier en daar nog papiertjes. Alles naai ik met de hand.

When I'm working on it it looks like this, a lot of fabrics and papers. Everything is done by hand.

De stofjes komen overal vandaan. Sommige lagen al 20 jaar in de kast andere kocht ik bij de Samler in Haarlem, of in Australië  van de MO fabric club  zoals de Anna Maria Horner stoffen, andere uit US  bij  Cia's palette  zoals de Alexander Henry stoffen , enkele komen van de V&A shop uit Londen, sommige meegenomen uit Frankrijk tijdens vakantie en op beurzen zoals de Amy Butler stof of de vintage stof van Mary Koval (de felle rood witte stof om het blauw witte paneel)

The fabrics came from everywhere. Some were laying in my closet for 20 years or more, others are from de Sampler in Haarlem, or from Australia from the MO fabric club  like the Anna Maria Horner fabrics, some from the US from Cia's palette  like the Alexander Henry fabrics, some are bought at the V&A shop in London, I also bought fabrics while on holiday in France and at shows like the Amy Butler fabric and the vintage fabric from Mary Koval 's stand (the bright red and yellow fabric, round the blue and white panel).

De tussenstof (diamonds) zijn van 'krantenstof' van de Sampler. En alle overige opvulblokken komen ook uit de voorraad, oud en nieuw. De losse hexagons heb ik bewust in medium en lichte stoffen gekozen zodat ze op de achtergrond blijven en niet concureren met de panelen. Ik heb er echt plezier in als ik zie dat het nou een geheel wordt. Toen alles los was was het wel een hele klus om alles een plek te geven.

I bought the 'newspaper' fabric at the Sampler. All the other hexagons in between the panels are in medium or light colours so they do not stand out against the panels. It is fun to sew everything together. It was quite a challenge to match everything up.

Nog even een minder leuke mededeling:

De Sampler, de quiltwinkel in Haarlem, waar ik koop en part-time werk gaat sluiten. Vanaf morgen (één april, geen grap) begint daar de uitverkoop,  hier kan je over 'het hoe en waarom'  lezen. Ik zal de winkel enorm missen en natuurlijk mijn baan, maar ik ben wel blij dat ik de kans heb gekregen om dit werk met hele aardige collega's, op die mooie plek in Haarlem, te kunnen doen. We gaan daar natuurlijk de komende tijd nog even hard tegenaan, er is nog een hoop mooie en leuke stof en benodigdheden te koop, dus misschien zie ik je daar.

And this is a not so happy anouncement:

The Sampler, the quiltshop in Haarlem where I buy and work, is going to close down. The big sale starts tomorrow, the first of April (no joke).  You can read all about it  here
I will miss the shop and my job terribly but I'm very thankful that I had the opportunity to work with very friendly colleagues at such a lovely place at Haarlem. We are going to have a busy time the next months and of course there are a lot of beautiful, nice fabrics and supplies for sale. So maybe I will see you there.

Bauw wit quiltje en top klaar en open huis/ Blue and White little quilt, qnother top and 'open house'

 Deze top maakte ik voor de quiltwinkel de Sampler in Haarlem, waar ik werk. Morgen is het open huis in de winkel. Best spannend en gezellig om dan te werken vind ik. Er is een hoop te zien, zoals het nieuwe cursusprogramma en  lesgeefsters. Ook korting op de stoffen en nog meer verassingen. Je kan het lezen op de website .
Het was leuk om deze ster te maken en nog best veel werk om de zandlopertjes zo netjes te naaien dat ze allemaal goed op maat waren.

This quilttop is made for the de Sampler, de quiltshop where I work. Tomorrow it's a special day. It is 'open house' . There is a lot to see like the new courses, workshops and a lot of the  teachers are there. It is exciting to work than I think. There are also discounts on fabrics and a lot more. On the website is all the information.
It was fun to make the star in the middle. The small blocks were a bit more difficult to make because they have to be excactly  the same size.

 De randstof die bij deze serie hoort heeft een mooie klein blauw randje erin.

The borderfabric has a nice small blue border in it.

Hier nog een keer de top op de naaidoos omdat het rood er zo goed bij past :)

 Dit is een miniquiltje met het patroontje: 'disappearing nine-patch'. Ook deze is voor de Sampler en is ook al in de winkel. Hij is gemaakt van een pakketje stofjes wat bestaat uit 15 kleine lapjes van 20cm bij 20 cm en een strookje donkerblauwe stof van 15cm breed. Het patroontje wat ik voor dit quiltje schreef krijg je bij dat pakketje ( of zo'n pakketje in een andere stofsamensteling). Ik vond deze erg leuk om te maken. Hij meet ongeveer 60 x 60 cm.

This is a blue and white miniquilt made from a 'disappearing ninepatch'. This one is  for the shop and already in the Sampler. You can buy the fabric in a small bundle. There are 15 pieces of 20 x 20 cm in the bundle and you need 15 cm dark blue fabric as well. You get the pattern I wrote,  when you buy a bundle of fabrics. It was a nice little quilt to make and measures ~60 x 60 cm.

De linker foto laat de achterkant zien met in het midden alle kleine restjes. En onder de quilt en op de foto rechts een blauw wit beertje. Hij zit altijd in mijn slaapkamer. Hij is gemaakt van mijn eigen patroontje en is al weer wat jaartjes geleden gemaakt.

The back of the quilt is on the left picture. In the middle scraps of what was left. You can also see my little blue and white bear. He is always in my bedroom. I made him some years ago from my own pattern.
