Back with a new quilt top in green

 Sometimes a new quilt just starts with inspiration from a walk in the woods....

we walked on this estate called 'Elswout' and looked through a window in an old shed...
I post regularly on 'Instagram' under the name of 'annemiekebears', as I did with this picture. So if I'm not here on Blogger I 'll probably be on Instagram:)

And some fabrics I had for a while now. The two left ones are older quilt fabrics and therefore in a sale, rather cheap. The right one is a very soft and worn bed sheet, I bought in England in a car booth sale.

After I cut up a lot of fabrics in squares of 10 by 10 cm I put them on point and arranged them ( on my design wall) over and over again until they formed dark and light parts.
I used this concept before when I made this quilt in blue.

 Sewing together is easiest done in diagonal rows and iron the seams one way (tricky photo because the iron was quite hot ;)

I used two liberty fabrics and two double gauze fabrics for the first time ever. The liberties are a bit thin but in between the other cottons they are all right. The double gauze fabrics are really soft, I'm happy with them.

Then I took the top outside today, the sun being very weak, but typical for the November month.

The beans are dried here in the abandoned allotments...all the gardeners had to leave because the land is sold to a developer.

I find it no problem if there is not enough fabric for one row. I just search for one that is close enough and has the same value from a distance. See the red cardinal on the last different square in the right hand corner?

A friend of mine described the quilt as 'a stress reducer because of the soothing colours'. I think she said it just right, don't you think?

My little doggy friend, Lizzy was waiting for me until the photos were taken. She is sweet isn't she?

Spring quilt finished!

The result of using just squares set on point, was a very pleasant surprise to me. It was a joy to design and make.The inspiration came from the book: 'The gentle art of quilt-making' by Jane Brocket

Broderie persé and a bit of nature...

Broderie persé: first time and having fun! I didn't expect it because it is a lot of work and I couldn't imagine that it would look good. The only negative point is the vlisofix I used. It is a bit too stiff, after some sewing (herringbone stitch like I used here) my arm gets sore. Well I have to do a little bit every day than. And next time buy less stiff stuff like 'steam a seem lite'. Here is a nice article about broderie persé, written by Barbara Brackman.

Now and then I make a block out of a box full of, sort of,  matching fabrics. May be someday it will be a quilt like the Sarah Morel quilt, see for images:  Sarah Morel quilt on Pinterest . The idea in the Sarah Morel quilt is that you alternate pieced blocks with Broderie persé blocks. I will sew whatever I want to make on a sewing day :)

Some of the pieced blocks are from a perpetual calender I really like. Every day in this calender has a different block.

Something totally different: Have you ever seen a bat up close?

I'm sorry it is not alive anymore. I found the little animal on the ground in the poring rain but couldn't leave it there. Partly because I find it interesting to see one up close and this way I can put it somewhere else where my dogs cannot touch it.

We see them in the evening flying around our apartment, I think that is rather special don't you think?
I hope I didn't scare anyone with these pictures..

What makes me happy today

De tekst in het hart op het rode velour, iets voor mij om te onthouden:

Uit het boek van Lea stansal: Le monde de Léa, patwork & Broderies,  zou ik alles wel kunnen maken.  Dit hart hierboven is zo'n voorbeeld. Het borduurwerk, de tekst en rand er om heen...mooi en een beetje gek tegelijk.

From the boek : Le monde de Léa, patwork & broderie. I could make all of the patterns. Everything is different, a bit crazy but beautiful. I love the embroidery on the heart, the rufles and ofcourse the text.

Deze quilt staat hier . Hij is van Loretta Bennet (Gee's Bend). Ook op mijn lijstje om zoiets nog eens te maken. Zonder patroon, werken op gevoel. Ik kan er naar blijven kijken :)

 Dit is een van mijn 'home made' beertjes, het is mijn eigen patroon. Een beetje apart een rode beer met een wit eendje, maar daarom wel een van mijn favouriete beren.

This is one of my 'home made'  bears, my own pattern. A bit weird: a red bear with a little white duck, but that is probably why I like him.

Tijdens een fietsrondje met de hondjes in het fietskarretje zagen we de berm vol in bloei met de Hommel molen langs de ringvaart, er midden in.

I made a trip by bike and my small dog trailer while we saw all those plants flowering around the 'Hommel mill'  (Hommel is the name of the mill, it means bumblebee).

Pioenrozen: om nooit genoeg van te krijgen!!! Ik vind ze ieder jaar weer een verassing.  Als de zon erop staat pak ik gauw mijn foto toestel.

Peonies: One of my favorite flowers, they surprise me every year. When the sun starts shining on the flowers I get out my camera as quick as I can.

Paperpieced koffiepot en double irish chain

Er zijn veel projecten waar ik mee bezig ben. En om alles eens op een rijtje te zetten zal ik ze laten zien. Dan wel verspreid over meerdere dagen anders wordt het zo'n lang verhaal...

Nummer 1:

Dit patroon heb ik bij  Sew-ichigo gekocht, ergens in mei denk ik.  Het is een  paper piecing foundation patroon. De blokken waren heel snel klaar. Waarschijnlijk omdat ik het zo leuk vond om te doen. Eerst had ik de koffiepot rechts gemaakt. Darna heb ik het patroon vergroot en dat zijn dan de pot en kopjes links. Er zijn nog meer patronen die ik nog kan maken, dus het wordt vervolgt.

 Nummer 2:

Van een hele berg rode lapjes en witte (of creme-kleurig) heb ik (samen met mijn dochter) een tijdje terug (Januari?) allemaal vierkantjes gesneden van 5 bij 5cm.  Als ik me goed herinner zo'n 3000! Het was de bedoeling om ze te gebruiken als begin en eind-lapjes tijdens andere projecten. Het was alleen zo'n rommelig gedoe op mijn naaitafel dat ik vanmorgen maar besloten heb om ze zo aan elkaar te naaien op mijn featherweight uit 1937. 

Dit zijn de eerste 2 blokken. Het wordt een 'double Irish chain'. Het patroon komt uit een boek van Bonnie Hunter . En als je links op haar site kijkt staan daar allerlei patronen. Echt heel veel! Dit project gaat natuurlijk nog wel even duren....

Deze clivia bloeide heel lang niet. Voor mijn vakantie heb ik de plant verpot en een paar dagen veel water gegeven. Toen we thuis kwamen, na 3 weken, zat er een knop in! Daar ben ik dan iedere dag een beetje blij mee.

In de volgende post komen nog meer projecten uit de kast, zeg maar.
We hopen op een beetje lekker weer in het weekend, maar het stormt hier voorlopig nog flink. Anders moeten we binnen maar wat verzinnen...niet zo moeilijk in mijn geval:)

Eindelijk de naaidoos, mijn witte spreien en meer POTC/ Finally my sewingbox, white bedspreads and more POTC.

 Mijn naaidoos is klaar! Hier had ik hem net in een kringloopwinkel gekocht en begon ik met verven en afgelopen week heb ik stukjes gestippeld plastic geknipt voor op de bodems van de laatjes.Net als mijn dochter loop ik regelmatig even een kringloopwinkel in. Je weet nooit wat je vinden zal!

My secondhand sewingbox is ready! It is painted and inside are pieces of dotted plastic. Just like my daughter I sometimes like to visit a secondhand store. You will never know what you will find there!

Hij is best groot als je alles uitklapt! Nou nog binnenkort inruimen.

It is big and has a lot of storage!

Een tijd geleden beloofde ik Margreet om ook eens mijn gehaakte spreien te laten zien. Daar komen ze dan van de witte stapel achter de naaidoos: het bovenste kleedje eerst. Hij is ongeveer 1.40 bij 1.40cm groot en van vrij stug katoenen garen gehaakt, waardoor hij heel mooi in model blijft. Ik heb hem gevonden op een 'vide grenier'  (is rommelmarkt) in 'Luc en Diois'  in Frankrijk.

A while ago I promised Margreet to show my crocheted throws on my blog. Here they are: On top a very firm small on: 1.40cm by 1.40cm. It stays in good shape. I found this one on a 'vide grenier' (flee market) in 'Luc en Diois' in France.

Deze sprei is gebreid en meet ongeveer 1.80cm bij 2.00cm. Het katoen is erg zacht. De sprei is gemaakt rond 1950 en is zo'n 50 jaar op bed gebruikt. Ik mocht hem zomaar meenemen (!) van de tweede vrouw van mijn schoonvader, op voorwaarde dat ik hem mooi vond en zou gebruiken.  Ik vind hem mooi, bijzonder en ben er extra zuinig op;)

This bedspread is knitted and measures 1.80cm by 2.00cm. The coton is very soft. It is made round 1950 and has been used on a bed for 50 years . The second wife of my father in law just gave it to me but I had to promise that it would be used and she first asked me if I liked it. Well I like it very much and it will be treasured.

Een blok bestaat voor de helft uit het blaadjespatroon en voor de andere helft uit de streepjes. Vier blokken samen vormen een groot blaadjes patroon.

The big block with leaves consists of 4 smaller blocks.

 Hij heeft wel een paar reparaties, maar die zijn erg netjes gedaan.

It has been very well repaired in some places, so that is oké. I like the idea that this one is used a lot.

 Deze sprei bestaat uit lange smalle banen. Van dichtbij lijkt het net kant. Deze is 2.00cm bij ongeveer 1.80cm groot. Ik heb echt respect voor de mensen die zulke mooie grote spreien haken. Ik zou de steek kunnen leren maken maar het is zo'n grote lap, met veel dezelfde steken in één kleur..

This bedspread consists of long strips and looks just like lace from close-up. It measures 2.00cm by 1.80cm. I really look up to people who make these things: so big, all in the same color and mostly the same stitch....

 Deze komt ook uit een tweedehands winkeltje, maar dan uit het zuiden van Engeland. Wat was ik blij toen ik deze vond!

This one comes from a secondhand shop from the south of England. I was so happy when I found it!

 De laatste van de stapel komt van een braderie uit Lisserbroek. Hier is vast veel dikke katoen in gegaan want hij weegt héél wat. Ook een flink formaat: 2.00cm bij 1.60cm.

The last one I found on a sort of flee market in Lisserbroek, my country. It is very heavy and made out of thick coton. It measures 2.00cm by 1.60 cm.

 Bedankt voor  het meedenken over de rand van deze top! Ik heb uiteindelijk gekozen om toch maar een hele rand extra te maken. Dit is al het eerste randje bruin ( bijna af) langs de buitenkant. Er komen nog 20 kleine vierkante blokjes omheen en dan weer een lichte rand. Als laatste komt er nog een gewone donkere rand omheen. Nog even doorwerken dus...

Thank you for helping me decide what to do with the border! I chose to make an extra border out of brown, extra square blocks and than later the light pieces on the outside. Than I have to make an extra border of prbably darker fabric. So there is still a lot of work to do...

Ondertussen komen buiten in de volkstuin alle klaprozen één voor één uit. Daar kijk ik ieder jaar naar uit. Zo gaaf!
 In the meanwhile are the poppies flowering one by one, on my alotment. I'm looking forward to this moment every year! Beautiful!
