Sheep wool crocheted blanket

This big sheep wool blanket is finished.  It is made with homespun wool, by my father in law. He turned 98 this month and is still spinning wool every day. It must be a healthy occupation!!!

I washed it with Ecolan.  A nice product to make the wool soft. It still is a rather rough blanket but very good to keep us warm in the winter.

I posted  this post a day earlier without finishing it ....strange.

2016: Lots of Projects to choose from.....

Hi Everyone, I want to thank all of you for reading my blog and your most appreciated and nice comments in 2015 !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here are 14 of my WIP projects. Have fun reading!
 

1718 coverlet update (1.73m by 0.35m), lots of more blocks to make. Such a nice project to work on, very different than usual and fabrics as linen, upholstery and woven fabrics too.

  Apple core doll quilt, needs quilting and a binding....

 tree top...needs finishing....(the blue and green is from another top)

Still working on my Cathedral windows quilt (in Dutch: 'Ramen lappie' á la Supergoof), this will take a while because the plan is to make it big. Love working on it though (all by hand).

 Crocheted sheep blanket in granny stripes, only needs a border (and finish all those loose hanging threads..)

 Teddy bear, made of sackcloth or sort of linen fabric, needs eyes and body... but I like him already.

Lizzy BOM, from Quilt it & Dotty,  lots of blocks to make....I don't mind that it will take a while. Nice to know I can make a block without having to think to much...

 Two tops with old Dutch patterns, both need finishing...

 Mushroom, autumn top, needs finishing...

 Red and white Irish chain, I already started machine quilting this...it is quite heavy and big to handle.

A red, white and blue star, part of a sampler quilt to be...there are other orphanage blocks in my closet in the same colour range so may be one day it can be a sampler quilt....

 '70ties Holiday quilt top, needs more borders... a project I take with me when I go on holiday...

Little dancing dollies table runner, made from antique French fabrics(bought in Nantes, France) on linen, mostly applique. I like this too, don't know why this stayed in my closet for so long...

Of course there are even more plans in my head and patterns and books in my closet, so I feel very privileged .

And now I bought Brigitte Giblin's second book: Feathering the nest 2 at the Quiltster
it is full of nice new projects, ha ha, just what I needed, new ideas!

Saturday the 23thrd I will be attending a workshop in 'back basting applique' and trunkshow (with antique quilts) from Dawn, collector with a needle  at Quilt it & Dotty at Overloon (the Netherlands).  Exciting!
(  I think there are still some tickets left for the trunk show only).

The plan is to show progress on all my projects from above in the coming year!!!

Red and blue experiment, more crocheting in wool and dolls bed.

New project... It is just an experiment and not finished yet. I'm quilting the red and blue scraps with the  cotton (see the balls above) in red and blue.

I like quilting in big stitches with the thin cotton (number 8). May be this piece is just going to be a quarter of a whole quilt. I have to make three more pieces then and sew them together with the 'quilt-as-you-go' method. We'll see.

Some times the light is so beautiful here on the river,  that I have to get my camera out, even if I'm still in my pajamas. This was in the morning.

And now my progress of the woolen crochet blanket. It is 72 cm long now, so I crocheted one third of the whole blanket I guess.

I hope my father in law, who did all the spinning of this wool, has some of the darker wool left. I almost ran out of it and it gives such a nice contrast.

If I'm crocheting I can cover up my legs easily see? He once made me some pair of socks too (the ones I'm wearing here). I saved them for my wooden shoes, which I hope to use again in the garden.

On our last trip in september to the Vendeé (France) I bought an old dolls bed at Les Sables d'Olonne (no website).  It is made of wood and came with a matress and cushion, filled with excelsior (the stuff old teddybears were stuffed with). My home-made teddybear has his own crocheted blanket with ripples.

Here the little bed in the sun in France. I hope to make small curtains for it some time. May be some made out of small hexagons would be nice.

 The matress and cushion were in the fridge for 48 hours,  just in case some little animals were living in there.
 The shop owner said the bed is from the 1930's.

 The bed is totally foldable too!

Our view to the west at the end of the day. The beautiful sky is different every minute of the day and there fore difficult not to photograph, I think.

Crochet sheep wool blanket

Al jaren krijg ik af en toe schapenwol van mijn schoonvader (96!!) Het werd steeds meer. Kleding maken vind ik geen optie. Het prikt me teveel. Ik besloot daarom om er een deken van te maken die ik met gemak ook op ons lits-jumeaux bed kan leggen.

Over the years my father-in-law (now 96!!) gave me sheep wool in different shades. The stock became larger. I didn't want to use it for clothing because it tickles too much. I decided to crochet a blanket. It will be big so I can use it on my lit-jumeaux bed.

 Mijn schoonvader spint en twijnt het zelf. Dat doet hij nog steeds op zijn hoge leeftijd. Zoals je hierboven ziet heb ik wol in allerlei tinten.

My father-in law still spins and twines the wool himself at his high age.You can see the different shades of wool above.

Door steeds 2 banen te haken (stokjes in groepjes van drie)  in één kleur is het kleurverschil goed te zien. Het maakt zelfs niet uit dat de ene bol iets dikkere wol heeft dan de andere.Je vind het patroon van Lucy van Attic24 hier (klik)

I crochet 2 rows in one colour . You can find the pattern written by Lucy from Attic24 here (click). Not all the colours are of the same thickness, but it works out nice.

 Ik haak met haaknaald nummer 6,5.

  I use crochetneedle 6,5.

De wol krijg ik aangeleverd in strengen. Kort geleden zag ik deze wolwinder bij Meervilt, een webshop (en echte winkel met gelimiteerde openingstijden  in Haarlem).  Met de wolwinder kan je erg mooie bollletjes maken. Hij is zijn geld echt waard!

I get the wool in skeins. Recently I found a woolwinder at Meervilt, a webshop (and real shop with limited opening hours in Haarlem). It is very easy to make the balls of wool. The woolwinder is worth the money!

Ik moet nog wel even doorhaken. De totale hoogte is 39cm en ik haakte dan 13 verschillende rijen. De deken is ongeveer 2,25m breed en begint al flink wat te wegen! Mijn schoonvader is erg enthousiast dat ik eindelijk iets van de wol maak dat nuttig is. En ik geef hem gelijk;)

I still have to go a long way. the total height is 39 cm, I made 13 different rows. The width is about 2,25m and has gaint some weight already! My father -in-law is very enthusiastic about the project that I'm finally making something useful out of it. And I agree;)

Happy Birthday Goofie and two finishes!

 Onze Goofie, ruwhaar teckel,  is gisteren 14 jaar geworden! We zijn nog steeds super blij dat hij nog bij ons is, al kampt hij met steeds meer gezondheids probleempjes. We vonden het gezellig gisteren, voor Goof is het altijd gezellig, als we maar samen zijn en er genoeg eten is.

Goofie, our dachshound, turned 14 yesterday! We are very glad he is still with us all though he is having more health problems now he is getting older. We had a nice day. Goofie thought so too: as long as we are together and there is enough food he is always a happy dog.

Dit is een geocache quilt die ik gemaakt heb voor de verjaardag van mijn man. Ik maakte hem ter gelegenheid van de 5000ste gevonden cache in juli dit jaar.( Hier kan je alles over het spel geocachen lezen).

This is a geocaching quilt (you can read about the game: geocaching here ) I made for my husbands birthday. I made the quilt on the occasion of our 5000th  cache found in july, this year.

Onze geocache naam is: Cache-amount en daarom maakte ik het logo links boven. Alle applicaties heb ik met de machine gedaan. Het quilten deed ik met de hand met een nr. 8 dik haakgaren in geel.

 In geocaching every one has a cache name and our name is : Cache-amount, so I made our logo, on the top left. All the applique is done by machine. The quilting is done by hand with a nr 8 crochet yarn in yellow.

 De rest heeft natuurlijk ook met geocachen te maken maar daar zal ik maar niet alles over uitleggen, wordt zo'n lang verhaal. De quilt is in ieder geval goed ontvangen.

All you can see on the quilt has to do with geocaching but I won't explain everything about it, it will be to much about geocaching. My husband appreciated the quilt so mission accomplished. 

Deze gehaakte deken is klaar.

 I finished this crocheted blanket this weekend.

 De maten zijn: 75cm bij 1,33cm, niet zo groot maar ik wilde hem graag afmaken.

 It turned out this size: 75cm by 1,33cm, not so big but I just wanted it being finished.

Ik heb er een blauwe rand omheen gehaakt die verassend goed uitpakte vond ik. Soms zie ik zoveel projecten om me heen dat het een goed gevoel geeft om er een af te maken. Ik wil Hannah bedanken voor haar patroon van de 'as-we-go stripey blanket' . Het is heel duidelijk geschreven met erg veel foto's.

The blue, sculpted border was a nice surprise. After seeing so many projects around me, it felt good to finish this. Thanks Hannah for the pattern of the 'as-we-go stripey blanket' . The pattern is written very clear and with a lot of photo's in it.

 Quilts van Carolyn Konig

En hier is Carolyn Konig. Haar nieuwe boek heb ik al besteld voor ik naar Nantes ging. Haar quilts zijn minitueus nagemaakt van de originele antieke quilts. Erg aardige vrouw die alles rustig beantwoorde en bevlogen vertelde over haar werk.

Here she is. I ordered her book in advance before I knew I was going to Nantes. Most of her quilts are self-made copies of very old antique quilts. She told me she uses a magnifier glass to see all the details. She is a very nice lady with lots of patience to answer all the questions.

Hieronder de quilts van Akiko Ike, een Japanse dame. Erg leuk en 'nieuw' om te zien. Alles wordt gemaakt van gebruikte stoffen.

 Akiko Ike zelf aan het werk. Ze spreekt alleen Japans,dus met haar praten kan niet. Er was wel een aardige Franse dame die hielp en waar ik even mee sprak. Zij sprak Frans Engels en Japans.

Akiko working, she only speaks Japanes but gets a lot of help.

 De stoffen worden op een ondergrond, een soort stramien, genaaid. In  het 100ste nummer van Quiltmania staat een leuke reportage over haar.

The fabrics are sewn on a layer. You can read all about her in the Quiltmania number 100.

 Ik kocht dit stapeltje kleine strookjes (alemaal gebruikt) bij Akiko Ike.

Kleine quilts, tafareetjes meestal uit Parijs, gemaakt door Martine Apaolaza, hier eentje te zien op een kaart. Bijzonder gedetailleerd en leuk om te zien.

 Wollen stoffen uit Donegal in nieuwe lichte tinten.

Veel Franse stands met borduurmaterialen. Ook een aantal Nederlandse, Japanse,  Engelse, Italiaanse, Finse en vast nog meer die ik nog niet noemde. Je kan hier makkelijk meer dan één dag naar toe. Erg indrukwekkend en veelzijdig.

Lots of embroidery stands. Also stands from outside France from all  over the world. You can easily go more than one day, impressive and versitile.

 Bij Facilecécile kocht ik deze kit, waarvan ik zo snel mogelijk dit mapje maakte. De stoffen, het borduurmateriaal en de beschrijving zaten in het pakketje. De beschrijving was niet zo uitgebreid en wat onduidelijk maar het is toch gelukt.

I bought this kit at Facilecécile and made it as soon as I could. The desription was not that clear but I managed it.

In het echt is het mapje groener en het rode randje iets minder fel. Super leuk om te maken en hij voelt ook lekker aan, niet onbelangrijk toch? En dan het gehaakte randje aan de stof vast....ik moest zelf uitpuzzelen hoe dat moest, maar het resultaat is zo gaaf. Dat ga ik vast meer gebruiken!!

The colours are slightly different in real life (greener and less bright red) Lovely to make and it feels very nice too, important don't you think? To crochet a border to the fabric was new to me and I love it. I will defenitely use it again!!
