Apple core doll quilt finish

A small finish today: a doll quilt, started many years ago, with the apple core pattern (and a little 1950's Steiff monkey;). It was a sandwich for a long time waiting to be picked up again.

I stitched the apple core pieces together by hand (English paper piecing method), appliqued them on top of the border fabric and machine quilted the quilt. The backing fabric is a second hand fabric from France (from a booth at a Show in Nantes I think).

I remembered myself how much I love making doll quilts! I hope I will make more.

Cruquius museum quilt

Six years (!) ago I had the idea to use the museum in my home town, to make a pattern for  new quilt ...

The building from 1849 has a large steam engine used to pump water out of the Haarlemmermeer (Lake of Haarlem).  So it could be used as dry land to live and farm on it. This picture is from 1904.
It stopped working since 1933 and became the Cruquius museum since. You can read more here at The official Museum website (in English and Dutch).

At the water side it has a beautiful window.

And chose the fabric in the middle as a starting point, the piles in the back are fabrics I collected over the years: folklore fabrics, old and new, quilt fabrics, thrift shop shirts, some fabrics were a gift, others were in my closet for 30 or 40 years!

I used the big window as the center of the quilt

And these shapes (clovers?) in the corners

See how big these shapes are at the museum wall?

The white tower shape with points came from the top of the building

The quilt is hand quilted with big stitches in white, with number 12 Perle yarn.

The border fabric is one of my most favorite fabric and used now in this project.

On a tree in the afternoon sun

After being washed and dried, here on our bed, it shows the quilting a little better.

Size: 2.30m L by 2.25m W (about 90" by 88" )

Wishing you a good start of the week,GroetjesAnnemieke

Meeting Sarah Fielke

Thursday the 28th of July I joined Sarah Fielke's workshop at  Dorry's  quiltshop in Overloon:  Quilt it & Dotty . We made one block from her 'Sunflowers and hearts quilt'

Sarah's instructions were clear and she took the time to answer all of our questions even though we had a big group of ladies. We had a lot of fun and I met several ladies for the first time, but also other bloggers.

The workshop included Sarah's new book: 'Old quilts new life' . I love to read and browse quilt books so I was more than happy with this. It is a fun book with lots of pictures including the antique quilts Sarah used for inspiration.

Funny enough I have just a small part on photo of her Sunflowers and hearts quilt. Lots of different pinks for the background which I like.

Dorry took care of us during the day. Lunch and Dinner were included, not to forget coffee, tea and cakes!

After dinner Sarah (on the right) told us her quilting life story and showed quilts from a suitcase taken all the way from Australia. This is her quilt called: 'Dotty for Dresden' (book: Material Obsession), which gave a big smile on Dorry's face (on the left). Both like dots!

This quilt is called: 'Charlotte sometimes' ( book: Material Obsession 2). On top is a small quilt from Sarah' s book: 'Little quilts', still on my wish list.

I love this quilt called: 'All that and the hatter'. Future project???

Sarah uses lots of animals in all her quilts, in sometimes unexpected places.

And just one more photo of this quilt....

We had lovely weather so the trunkshow was held in the garden.

Here a close-up of that small quilt Sarah is holding.

This is from the book: 'Quilting from little things', but my book is in Dutch and called: 'Quilten met Sarah Fielke'. So I only know the Dutch name of the quilt: 'Molentje' . It is a fun quilt with a beautiful fabric in the corners  from Anna Maria Horner.

The border is very special and fun!!!

Another fun quilt. If you want to learn how to make these words and letters you can go to Sarah's Craftsy class

Thanks Dorry and Sarah for this wonderful day!!!

If you want to read more about this day and see more pictures I saw two more posts: Ingrid and Anja

Have a creative weekend,

Another 1718 update and lollipops tutorial

The back of the coverlet top in progress.

Detail of the coverlet top with one of the lollipops block (the large block with the 16 hearts on the right).

I almost finished the third lollipops block, not the easiest blocks to make.

This is how I made the lollipops block:
I prepared all the hearts, and 'sticks' as  normal applique pieces.  I use Floriani ( bought it here: Hergarden, Beverwijk , it is a water soluble stabilizer) and fold and glue the seam allowances to the back. I placed them on the pattern in the book to glue them temporarily together, the hearts on the 'sticks'.

Secondly I made the dark pieces, using freezer paper on top. This way it is easy to see where they are going and glued them together.

This is how the back looks.

 The second one is done.

Sewed these two together with the pieced triangle (inset seam)

I use the freezer paper shapes over and over again. Here I used a white pencil to draw on the dark fabric, around the freezer paper shapes. After this the freezer paper can be removed.

The back again, after half of the lollipops block is finished.

And the front. Hope this  little tutorial was helpful.

This is the update of my coverlet top so far. I made 146 blocks (some are not on this photo but on my design wall and not attached yet), 36 blocks to go.

Have a nice Weekend,

note: The Floriani stabilizer and some coffee and/or tea dye will disappear after washing when it is finished.

1718 Coverlet update, 5 'rows' done!

A little update on my 1718 coverlet reproduction: I'm working on it whenever I can, it is so different from what I have done so far and very addictive...

The sunlight came in on Saturday for a few minutes. I tried to capture the whole width of this piece (hanging side ways)....
If you want to take a look at the original one that is in the collection of the Quilt museum in York ( sadly closed down in 2015, but you can still see the collection online ) you can look here . The colours on this site are much brighter than in the book with the pattern. I'm not sure which one is closer to the original coverlet, how it looks today.

This is where all the blocks are made, one by one. Some of them by hand others by machine...

The fabrics are mostly woven fabrics, like upholstery cottons, linen, old cottons dyed in coffee, Japanese woven fabric (fabrics I used in my Love entwined 1790 coverlet reproduction ) and old clothing.

With most of the fabric choices I try to stay close to the original coverlet, but sometimes I just pick what is in my 1718 fabric box.

This morning I did some early morning stitches before breakfast.  I unpicked the B and the 0 from the appliqued letters, they were out of line. Than I appliqued new ones, better I tthink...

On the left of my table I put up my 'design wall'.

It is a bit to narrow but it is an impression. I'll be off to make more new blocks and hope to show them soon.
