'Foep' quilt with crazy borders finished!

Most birds have embroidered eyes, not this one. The fabric was just in the right place for this little bird. It made me happy when this happens.

This 'Foep' quilt has crazy borders. The original borders are beautiful, all made out of lace but I found my borders needed more colour for an overall balance. Crazy borders with a chicken found at a thrift shop.

Lots of ric-rac and other ribbons, fun for the children who will be sitting under this quilt. Probably my sister's grandchildren if they want too. 

My initials in light blue, embroidered with a chain stitch and perlé yarn number 8.

The title of the quilt and also the title of the children's story book by Ingid van der Harst embroidered in chain stitch too.

Some fabrics are a bit old like the brown one with flowers from the 90's, some new quilt fabrics, some from thrift shops like the dark blue shirt fabric...

 And others are from table napkins or Dutch folklore fabrics. There is different eyelet in there too like the light brow bird.

More 'Foep'

Over the last days I made some progress on my 'Foep' quilt .

Some of the fabric choices, guarded by one of my early home made Teddies. Some fabrics are quite new, others were in my drawers for decades like the brown one with the orange, yellow and white flowers. Some are quilt fabrics, while some were old cloths like the brown eyelet fabric. There are also men shirts, old sheets and the middle  quilt part background fabric in light blue, is from a doll bed curtain.

To make the 'Foep quilt' I need lots of lace. I already had some for years and years in baskets and boxes.

This is band (cord?) for upholstery I presume. It is French and old. 

 It was the right colour for me.

The quilting I do is simple. I use Valdani thread and make rather big stitches. I make the quilt in a 'quilt as you go' way.

I make all the appliqué birds and eggs by machine and  they need fusible web (already cut out here, on my big Teddy bear's legs) before I iron them on. After that, they are stitched down with a blanket stitch.

Some of the birds and eggs have batting in them to make them more alive.

This is what  I've done so far. I'm enjoying the whole process of making, machine sewing, hand sewing the lace, embroidering and choosing colours.

Foep quilt

Today I started a new quilt called: 'Foep en 't vogelhoedje'. It is a quilt with a story about cats and birds. The pattern is by: Supergoof and easy to order, look at her blog on the top-right corner.

In November I joined a workshop given by Ingrid van der Harst (Supergoof. The location that day was Quiltshop Vlijtig Liesje at Tienhoven (the Netherlands). I visited this shop for the first time and will certainly go again. It is a really fun shop in her beautiful garden, run by a nice lady called Hanneke Kwakkenbos.

 It is fun to make!

 It took some time until I found the right fabrics, but eventually I did....and what a mess I made....

Lizzy (our dachshund) doesn't mind, as long as we are together.

Supergoof's trunkshow

Gisteren was ik in Naaldwijk bij de De Quilthoeve . Een mooie winkel die er erg verzorgd en gezellig  uitzag. Veel mooie stoffen en erg veel kantjes, daar ga ik zeker nog eens terug. Ook was ik daar naar toe gegaan voor een quiltshow van Supergoof !

Ik weet het , ik zag een aantal van haar quilts al eerder....maar ik kan er zo van genieten dat het weer een feest was om ze allemaal te zien en te voelen. Ja, als Ingrid (Supergoof) bij iedere quilt haar grappige, ontroerende en informatieve  verhaal verteld heeft, geeft ze haar quilts 'gewoon' door aan de mensen in de zaal. Dat vind ik wel bijzonder want niet iedereen zou dat zomaar doen denk ik.

Ze nam ook nieuw werk mee, wat nog in de maak was zoals de 'dancing dollies', een mandjesquilt en de rood/witte ruiten.

 De Sarah Morell quilt... erg mooi.

En zie je ..hier had ik de vingerhoedjesquilt gewoon even bij me. Alle quilts voelen zo lekker aan. Eigenlijk alsof ze al 100 jaar oud zijn en dat bedoel ik dan als een compliment! Waarschijnlijk komt dat omdat ze helemaal met de hand worden gemaakt, niet gestreken, zodat ze niet helemaal superstrak op de ondergrond komen. Als ze dan ook nog met de hand worden gequilt, daarna in de machine gewassen, gedroogd in de droger en gewoon dagelijks gebruikt worden, dan gaan ze er doorleefd uitzien en lekker aanvoelen natuurlijk!

Na Ingrid haar verhaal hoor je iedereen praten over hoe fijn het eigenlijk is als je gewoon op je eigen manier werkt,  met de door jouw gekozen stoffen, kleuren en materialen. Dat het ook niet uitmaakt hoe lang iets duurt als je er maar veel plezier in hebt. Tegelijkertijd kan het naaien en quilten je door moeilijke tijden heen helpen, als een soort 'quilttherapie' zal ik maar zeggen.

Van deze quilt ben ik bijna gesmolten....ik moet er steeds aan denken. Het is een rood/witte 'Nearly Insane'.
