Toile de Jouy

Saturday I found these antique pieces of old quilts with toile de Jouy prints, at an antique market. They are small and some are very worn but I loved them so took them home!!!

This is what I read at the museum at Jouy site and Wikipedia: Making fabrics with these kind of pictures started mid 18th century in Ireland. They became very popular in Britain and France after that. The term 'toile de Jouy' is French and came from the toiles produced in Jouy-en-Jonas (near Paris) starting around 1760. Later these toiles were produced in many more places in France and they all had their own patterns.

So I have a selection of different pieces and they come from different French areas. I don't know which pieces come from where. I hope to find out soon. I already ordered a book about toile de Jouy.

Interesting and strange pictures aren't they? Some seem to tell stories I think.

Some pieces are quilted (so there are 3 layers) and other pieces are just pieces of single fabrics.
Lots of possibilities to use those in a wall quilt ( probably to fragile to use as a bed quilt). I washed them and laid them out on a bed. Every time I walk by I enjoy looking at them!
May be any one of you know sites or books with reliable information?

Wishing you lots of creativity,

Cathedral windows update

Cathedral windows in the Alsace, France, with the little holiday cabin where we stayed in the background, in September.

Cathedral windows at the swimming pool in le Vendée, France and on the terrace, also in September.

I'm still working on it whenever I have some time left in between other projects, sometimes  in the car or on the couch in the evening

This is the size of my cathedral windows quilt today, photographed in the late afternoon sun. It measures:
82 cm by 72 cm.

Second day exhibitions at Ste Marie-aux-mines

Work from Sheila Frampton-Cooper (from the USA, but now living in the Provence). There are many quilts displayed from her, she made all of them the last 5 years. I like her work very much. She told me she works  in an intuitive way, without patterns or plan. She creates it while she works at it.

Sheila Frampton-Cooper: 'Deep sea portals'

Sheila Frampton-Cooper: 'Marie Magdeline de la Sainte Baum'.

These three quilt projects above are made by Barbara Lange from Germany.

Made by Gaby Mett. I would love to make something like this :)

Made by Rebecca Campeau (France). Strange isn't it?

Detail photo from work made by Beatrice Lanter.

These two extraordinary quilts were made by Brigitte Busk from Denmark.

This one is called : Flames and made by Hilde van Schaardenburg (The Netherlands)

One of the 'Modern quilt guild'  quilts. There many, but this is a detail from a quilt made by Kathy York (USA)

And the last picture from today. I made my first little block from the 1718 Coverlet. I'm surprised at how similar the fabrics are! This was from a scrap bag I bought yesterday (see post from 16 september 2015).

Hope you enjoyed the pictures. There was so much to see. These photo's above are just a selection from what I liked or wanted to show because it looked new to me.

First impressions of Ste Marie-aux-mines patchwork meeting

Just some pictures very old quilts,

Lots of things to buy, very busy at the stands...
Nice quilts at the exhibitions like this one from Austria (sorry I forgot the name of the maker)

The beautiful fabrics I bought to make the 1718 coverlet (yes a new project;). Some of them are linen from:
Neelam and from Magret Behrends-Kohl (also the scraps at the left). Others are mostly Oakshott cottons at the Quiltcabin from Dortmund.

I enjoyed the first day very much and I will be back with more pictures!

Hexagons to 'Feather the nest'

Yesterday I posted a post and now another but I could not wait to show you these pictures. Once I bought Brigitte Giblin's book Feathering the nest at the Sampler (Haarlem) I started these 2 blocks. I had to look differently to my stash of fabrics because the panel needs a big pattern. The outside hexagons are made really fast.

In the book are a lot of fun quilts with a very different use of clour and print as I am familiar with.

I used white around the edges. It combines better with the modern fabrics than beige I think.

I will have to thank what next. Maybe I will do it a little different than in the book. Maybe make it larger with extra blocks?

And again a picture from our week in the Vendée ( France). This is the beach, along the Atlantic coast. No one there, very beautiful!

Another part of the beach, very wide and quiet again.

Our little dog-friends were there too. Goof (on the right) is twelve years old nw and he walks slow and all the sniffling takes for hours but he likes to come. Lizzy (left) is four. She is very quick and funny!
Have a great monday,

Fijne maandag verder,
