Finally I met Brigitte Giblin!

This was a happy day! I finally met Brigitte Giblin. She was in Amsterdam to give workshops at  Den Haan en Wagemakers.  Brigitte is a very talented, friendly and relaxed lady whose work I admire for quite some time now.
As some of you may know I made coverlets from her first book : 'Feathering the nest'  already in 2013 and 2014, see these two photo's below:

I had hoped to meet her one day and now was the chance. She gave a workshop called :'Tricks of the trade- Fussy cutting workshop'.

We started with a package of templates (made by Brigitte herself:), paper shapes, laser cut 'paper windows', enough fabric, instructions, photo examples, a folded mirror for finding the right spot to cut into and coffee with sweets. Enough to keep us busy the whole morning!

 All kinds of shapes placed here by Brigitte: this is what she calls playing with fabric.

 She uses beautiful bags to hold all her stuff. You can find the pattern here

Did you ever think of finishing your coverlet (there is no quiltng on most of her coverlets like in the old days in England) with these kind of fringe? Fun isn't it?

Look at this folded quilt's beautiful edge finish!!!

My photo's of this quilt don't do this quilt justice but this was all I could do in the room upstairs the shop.

Thanks Brigitte for all the tips and tricks on  this wonderful morning. I hope we will meet again some day.

I could not leave the shop without taking some fabric home....

And Than I left Amsterdam again.....full of happy memories.

2016: Lots of Projects to choose from.....

Hi Everyone, I want to thank all of you for reading my blog and your most appreciated and nice comments in 2015 !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here are 14 of my WIP projects. Have fun reading!
 

1718 coverlet update (1.73m by 0.35m), lots of more blocks to make. Such a nice project to work on, very different than usual and fabrics as linen, upholstery and woven fabrics too.

  Apple core doll quilt, needs quilting and a binding....

 tree top...needs finishing....(the blue and green is from another top)

Still working on my Cathedral windows quilt (in Dutch: 'Ramen lappie' á la Supergoof), this will take a while because the plan is to make it big. Love working on it though (all by hand).

 Crocheted sheep blanket in granny stripes, only needs a border (and finish all those loose hanging threads..)

 Teddy bear, made of sackcloth or sort of linen fabric, needs eyes and body... but I like him already.

Lizzy BOM, from Quilt it & Dotty,  lots of blocks to make....I don't mind that it will take a while. Nice to know I can make a block without having to think to much...

 Two tops with old Dutch patterns, both need finishing...

 Mushroom, autumn top, needs finishing...

 Red and white Irish chain, I already started machine quilting this...it is quite heavy and big to handle.

A red, white and blue star, part of a sampler quilt to be...there are other orphanage blocks in my closet in the same colour range so may be one day it can be a sampler quilt....

My Bird quilt top...like this one too, a bit quirky..

 '70ties Holiday quilt top, needs more borders... a project I take with me when I go on holiday...

Little dancing dollies table runner, made from antique French fabrics(bought in Nantes, France) on linen, mostly applique. I like this too, don't know why this stayed in my closet for so long...

Of course there are even more plans in my head and patterns and books in my closet, so I feel very privileged .

And now I bought Brigitte Giblin's second book: Feathering the nest 2 at the Quiltster
it is full of nice new projects, ha ha, just what I needed, new ideas!

Saturday the 23thrd I will be attending a workshop in 'back basting applique' and trunkshow (with antique quilts) from Dawn, collector with a needle  at Quilt it & Dotty at Overloon (the Netherlands).  Exciting!
(  I think there are still some tickets left for the trunk show only).

The plan is to show progress on all my projects from above in the coming year!!!

Hexagon panel coverlet FINISH!

Vanochtend het laatste stukje genaaid en nu is de sprei klaar! Het is geen quilt want hij is niet doorgestikt. Net zoals vroeger werden deze spreien (in het Engles: 'coverlets') niet doorgestikt en waren voor de sier op bed of voor op tafel.

This morning I sewed the last bit and now  the coverlet is finished! t is not a quilt because it is not quilted and has now batting, just like in the old days when they were used as beadspread or on the table.

 

De top is op de border geappliceerd. De hoeken zijn in verstek genaaid en daarna afgerond. Dit deed ik nooit eerder dus het was even uit proberen.

I appliqued the top on the border. The corners are mitered and for the first time I rounded the corners off .

Ook het gebruik van ric-rac band is de eerste keer. Ik was erg blij met het resultaat. Zeker voor herhaling vatbaar! Ik naaide eerst de ric-rac op de voorkant van de top. Daarna ging de goede kant van de achterkant tegen de goede kant van de top en stikte ik nog een keer rond. Net een klein stukje open gelaten voor het keren van de sprei en dan het laatste stukje dicht genaaid.

It was the first time also that I used ric-rac and I'm happy with the result.I will certainly use it again!

 

 Zo kan je tegelijkertijd de achterkant zien. De hele achterkant is van dezelfde stof. Deze stof vond ik al zo lang leuk en nu was het precies de juiste kleur voor deze sprei.

This backing fabric was the right one for this top.

 Echt bijzonder hoe mooi de ric rac er tussen valt. Eerst zag ik daar tegen op maar dat was een leuk klusje.

So nice to see that the ric-rac is just in the middle. I thought it would be difficult to make but it wasn't at all.

En hier ligt hij op mijn bed. Ik heb hem zo groot gemaakt als  Brigitte Giblin hem maakte en niet van tevoren bedacht waar die moest komen. Dat gebeurd bij mij wel vaker. De sprei past gelukkig wel op het bed op deze manier. Altijd een bijzonder gevoel als iets af is. Ik ben natuurlijk al aan iets anders begonnen....tot gauw maar weer.

Here it is on my bed. I made it the same size as Brigitte Giblin  did and luckily it fits on my bed. It feels special when something is finished doesn't it? I already started something new...so see you soon!

Brigitte Giblin in Nederland in 2015? En de hexagon top.

 Alle tussenstukjes zitten eraan, joepie!!

Heeft er iemand nog het commentaar van Brigitte Giblin gelezen op mijn vorige post? Ze geeft in 2015 dus haar tweede boek uit en hoopt naar Nederland te komen na Nantes (2015). Zouden er meer mensen zoals ik, ook graag eens les van haar krijgen vroeg ik me af??.Het zou leuk zijn als ik reacties aan haar door kon geven. Stuur me een mailtje alsjeblieft, als je het leuk vind als ze komt.

All the hexagons and diamonds are sewn together!!

Did anyone read the comment of Brigitte Giblin in my last post? She will publish her second book in 2015 after the show in Nantes (France). She hopes to visit The Netherlands too in 2015. Is there perhaps anyone els who would want her to teach here, in the Netherlands??  It would be nice for her if you could tell her if you did, so could you pleas send me an email if you would like her to come:)

Aan sommige delen moesten nog deze sterrenpunten. Zie je de tijger net in het onderste hoekje liggen slapen? Het is een hele grappige stof, er is nog een heel stuk over met leeuwen andere apen en zo.

I had to add the diamonds in some places. Do you see the tiger lying in the bottom corner? This fabric is very funny. There is some left with lions and other monkeys and more.

Voor sommige randen moest ik hexagon stof in delen aan elkaar naaien omdat ik net niet genoeg had zoals met deze Anna Maria Horner stof. Improviseren dus.

Sometimes I had to improvise and piece fabric together like here with the Anna Maria Horner fabric.

 Hier wilde ik graag deze stof in het midden gebruiken en was het ook te weinig. Ik heb het opgelost door er een extra rand hexagonnen binnenin te doen van eenstof die ik sowieso al erg leuk vond.

There was a little piece left of this pretty fabric so I made an extra hexagon row.

Deze roze rand varieert ook iets als je goed kijkt. Dit soort oplossingen bedenken vind wel leuk om te doen.

If you look close you see the variation in the pink fabric. I like making these solutions.

Nu nog het 'kranten-randje'

All is left is the 'newspaper border'.

Als de top goed op het randje ligt en vastgemaakt is met tijdelijke lijm en/of spelden dan heb ik voorlopig nog heel wat te appliceren.

I basted the top to the border fabric. There is a lot of applique to do now.

Ik hoop dat Brigitte Giblin naar Nederland komt, dus niet vergeten te schrijven als je dat ook graag wilt!

Soms krijg ik 'hulp'....

Some times I get help....

Als ik alles aan elkaar zet ziet het er zo uit, een berg stof en hier en daar nog papiertjes. Alles naai ik met de hand.

When I'm working on it it looks like this, a lot of fabrics and papers. Everything is done by hand.

De stofjes komen overal vandaan. Sommige lagen al 20 jaar in de kast andere kocht ik bij de Samler in Haarlem, of in Australië  van de MO fabric club  zoals de Anna Maria Horner stoffen, andere uit US  bij  Cia's palette  zoals de Alexander Henry stoffen , enkele komen van de V&A shop uit Londen, sommige meegenomen uit Frankrijk tijdens vakantie en op beurzen zoals de Amy Butler stof of de vintage stof van Mary Koval (de felle rood witte stof om het blauw witte paneel)

The fabrics came from everywhere. Some were laying in my closet for 20 years or more, others are from de Sampler in Haarlem, or from Australia from the MO fabric club  like the Anna Maria Horner fabrics, some from the US from Cia's palette  like the Alexander Henry fabrics, some are bought at the V&A shop in London, I also bought fabrics while on holiday in France and at shows like the Amy Butler fabric and the vintage fabric from Mary Koval 's stand (the bright red and yellow fabric, round the blue and white panel).

Zover ben ik nou....
De tussenstof (diamonds) zijn van 'krantenstof' van de Sampler. En alle overige opvulblokken komen ook uit de voorraad, oud en nieuw. De losse hexagons heb ik bewust in medium en lichte stoffen gekozen zodat ze op de achtergrond blijven en niet concureren met de panelen. Ik heb er echt plezier in als ik zie dat het nou een geheel wordt. Toen alles los was was het wel een hele klus om alles een plek te geven.

This is how far I'm now with the top...
I bought the 'newspaper' fabric at the Sampler. All the other hexagons in between the panels are in medium or light colours so they do not stand out against the panels. It is fun to sew everything together. It was quite a challenge to match everything up.

Nog even een minder leuke mededeling:

De Sampler, de quiltwinkel in Haarlem, waar ik koop en part-time werk gaat sluiten. Vanaf morgen (één april, geen grap) begint daar de uitverkoop,  hier kan je over 'het hoe en waarom'  lezen. Ik zal de winkel enorm missen en natuurlijk mijn baan, maar ik ben wel blij dat ik de kans heb gekregen om dit werk met hele aardige collega's, op die mooie plek in Haarlem, te kunnen doen. We gaan daar natuurlijk de komende tijd nog even hard tegenaan, er is nog een hoop mooie en leuke stof en benodigdheden te koop, dus misschien zie ik je daar.

And this is a not so happy anouncement:

The Sampler, the quiltshop in Haarlem where I buy and work, is going to close down. The big sale starts tomorrow, the first of April (no joke).  You can read all about it  here
I will miss the shop and my job terribly but I'm very thankful that I had the opportunity to work with very friendly colleagues at such a lovely place at Haarlem. We are going to have a busy time the next months and of course there are a lot of beautiful, nice fabrics and supplies for sale. So maybe I will see you there.
