Mid Century Headboard Meets Chalk Paint

If you have been reading my blog for a while, you guys already know I am always after a bargain....always after what I need at a cheap or little to nothing price. I always see the glass half full when looking for things that can be transformed into something I want or need.

My husband Steve, however, does not see things the same way. In fact, a few Saturdays ago, my brother and my husband went with me on a shopping "hunt" for some pieces I needed to find for my daughter. It was like a double whammy, but my brother was able to keep his opinions to himself better than my husband.

If I tell you my husband was "negative Neil" ( I won't call him Nellie) the whole day, that would be an understatement. First stop was a hotel liquidators store....that story will be coming in a few days, because we were there over THREE hours, and my husband wanted to leave after walking in the door...... but the second stop was at a new thrift store I have mentioned here on my blog.

I had spotted a king headboard earlier in the week and wanted to go back and get it. My husband tried to tell me it would be gone when we got to the store, but I knew better. He kept trying to tell me that if it was any good at all, it was already sold. I just told him to keep driving.

Want to know why I knew it would still be there?? (wish I had taken a better picture) You see that green arrow??? The headboard I wanted was laying on the floor on the BOTTOM of a huge pile of headboards. There were wicker headboards, wooden ones and a cloth covered one. Mine was at the bottom of the pile and I knew it was a king size, just what I needed. I also knew in my heart, it was being overlooked. My diamond was laying under a pile of junk and no one was paying it any attention.

The headboard was marked $30.00 and I was happy to pay that for it. It is a super mid century wooden headboard and I sorta felt guilty knowing I was going to paint all that gorgeousness. If you are a mid century fanatic, please accept my humble apologies. I know some of you are swooning. I mentioned, my brother was with us and he just did not think this hunk of junk was worth more than $20.00 and like my brothers true nature, he got them down to $20.00. BINGO. Amidst all the grumbling from Steve, I was so excited as I saw what this could be and felt sure it was going to turn out stunning.

This is the first project I have used chalk paint on. I won't go into the details on how this is made or works, because I am sure by now you all know the procedure. I found the recipe online and made my own chalk paint. I knew I needed to purchase the finishing wax and both of these mediums were new to me. That did not deter me any and I forged ahead with my plans.

The headboard needed a light sanding, just to smooth out some of the imperfections and I just wiped it off with a very lightly damp cloth. Next, I taped off where I wanted to keep different colors separate and began painting. I used three different color gray paints to sorta give a nod to the ombre technique. The very lightest was in the middle and graduated out to the darkest, which was the main color of the headboard. As you can see, I started out working on this as an outside project, but it moved indoors as the weather did not cooperate like I needed it to.

I used two coats of the chalk paint, and that was all I needed. Once the paint was dry, I applied the finishing wax, left it on for about twenty minutes and buffed it out with a clean, soft cloth. I was amazed at how the finishing wax really made a huge difference. It really turned out like I pictured it would in my mind.

Simple, clean lines with a freshly new lease on life. This forgotten headboard went from straight off the floor of a thrift store to a new bedroom makeover. I think it is a really nice updated look and it looks super fantastic in my daughters room.

Total cost of this transformation:

headboard $20.00
paint and supplies for this piece $9.00
elbow grease by mom $0.00

Total: $29.00

See that little glimpse of the wall art over the bed?? I can not wait to show you that piece and how to make it. It sets off the whole room, very romantic and fun. I will have that post up this week along with the rest of the apartment transformation for my daughter!

What do you think about this project? Have you used chalk paint yourself? If not, I have to say it works like a dream. No sanding (really not needed) no stripping, no prep with a solid finish. I love how this turned out and how easy it was to achieve the look I was after.

Vintage Thingie Thursday: Vintage Inspired Toys ~ Christmas Gifts From Marshall's

Please only ONE link per week. Lastly, if you link in, LINK back to my blog, so everyone can see all of the vintage goodies on display that day. If you don't link back here, they won't know who to visit......thanks so much.

Okay, folks, I know I have just skipped all the way over Thanksgiving and went straight to Christmas this year. Guess I have joined the retail world in that regards. I will tell you however, on facebook, I am doing the 30 day challenge of posting once a day something I am thankful for, so I really did not skip Thanksgiving all together, just here on the blog!

Anyway, I wanted to share these great vintage inspired toys that are at our local Marshall's. I love that store. Marshall's always has cute and unique things for any gift giving occasion. Along with some awesome vintage inspired Christmas decor this year, they also have some neat toys this year.

Look at this cute Balloon kit...love the packaging! As a kid, I know I would have been intrigued by this toy, but I have always been a little scared of balloons popping. But I know as a kid, I would have wanted to learn to make these figures....heck, I wish I knew how today at my age!

All of these toys are from Lucky Lad, and this magic trick would totally been right up my alley. I always loved magic tricks. I asked for a magic trick set one  year for Christmas, and I know I got one and wonder if it was something like this one. You know why I was so interested in a magic trick set??

Okay, I will tell you.....my family was invited to dinner once to my dad's bosses house. Of course we were lectured on how to act, mind your manners and all that spill we  remember well our parents saying from our childhoods. My dad's philosophy was "Children are meant to be seen and not heard"  Seriously, I wish I had a dollar for every time I heard that.

Anyway.....after dinner and before we were to leave, the boss's daughter, who was maybe my age had a table set up and she put on a magic show. The thing that stuck with me the most was my dad sat there even after he announced we were leaving, he laughed, he acted engaged and he acted like he really enjoyed that magic show. I took note of that because if it had been myself wanting to put on a magic show, it would have never happened. I was too young to realize at the time he did not really care about seeing that magic show at all. Instead, he was putting on a show for his boss, forty five years later it makes sense.

Likewise, I did get a magic set that year for Christmas, but the only ones who enjoyed the  magic show I desperately wanted to preform, were my stuffed animals. Dad never had the time to see that magic show I wanted to give. Mainly, because there were no bosses to impress at our house....he was the boss. It's sorta strange what triggers memories....this silly magic trick toy brought that to the front of my mind today as I touched the box sitting on the shelf. It was strange that after all this time, the memory still brought a sting of disappointment.

Anyway, moving right along, I also had Jacks....but the jacks I had came in little packages that were displayed on spinning display racks at the corner grocery store. I know that because my memaw bought many a Jacks set for me from the corner store. I love the box these came in.

Look at the adorable box these magic rings come in! I am thinking these would be so cute underneath a little tree. I have decided I won't buy them for myself, but I have been tempted as I thought about these today after seeing them.

Joke books were also something I enjoyed as a young kid. These practical joke gadgets are things I know I had at one time in my childhood. I remember the nail in the finger most of all!

If there is someone on your Christmas list who enjoys these types of toys, these really bring back a lot of memories...some good, some not so good, but memories of long ago just the same! I think they would make great stocking stuffers!

Happy Vintage Thingie Thursday......and in case you are wondering....Marshall's only knows me for handing over wads of cash...nothing more! I just wanted to share these today, I thought they were really a blast from the past.

Favorite Thing Christmas Gift Idea ~ Christmas Bear

Photo from Mad Man Knitting Blog

This time of year, I keep my eyes open for unique gifts. Sometimes, I find unique gifts that I want for myself. This is absolutely one of my all time favorite gift ideas that I have come across in a long time. At first glance, this Christmas bear really does not look much difference than any other ordinary Christmas bear.....but when you look closer, and read the story...it certainly will touch your heart, at least it did mine...and my husband is ordering me one for Christmas!!

I really don't have a clue how I found the website, or much less the facebook page, but below is the exert from Mad Man Knitting's Facebook page...and I know it will stir some interest to dig a little deeper as it did for me

Mad Man Knitting: A year ago I lost everything and had to find a way to feed myself. Somehow, I fell back on my old hobby of knitting to survive. What was a born was a teddy bear that has grown in popularity and adoration.

I quickly discovered not only the Facebook page but also a blog...and well, you know how we all love to find a new blog! There on the blog you will find a link to all of his wonderful bears.

Mad Man Knitting has set a goal for himself to only make 100 of these Christmas bears. I am assuming they are made by order, but only 100 will be made. They are very inexpensive and there is a link here and here to the blog post that talk about the Christmas Bears. How inspirational to read about someone who decided not to feel sorry for himself and put forth a plan to make it one way or another.

So as we head into the holiday season, this is the first on my list of Favorite Things, from me, The Coloradolady.

Stop by and have a look around, you will be inspired I am sure as I really felt inspired and touched as I read about this incredible man. Oh, and just to be clear, Mad Man Knitting has no idea who I am, has never heard of me, and has no idea I am putting his bear on my favorite thing list this holiday season. But, that bear is clearly one of my favorite things...as well as the man and story behind its creation!

I could not wait for this Fabulous Finds Friday post. On this day, I try to feature a unique gift idea for the upcoming holidays and showcase small business owners with incredible talent.

This week I'd like to introduce you to Lemondrop Vintage. Marie is the owner of this small online shop and she makes the most incredible charm bracelets I have ever seen using vintage and modern trinkets to make a really one of a kind bracelet.

photo from Marie's website - the photos were much better than the one I tried to take.
How do I know this? I was the lucky winner of her Halloween giveaway and when this came in the mail this week, I was really blown away. I have always loved charm bracelets of all kinds, but never, ever have I owned one that is as lovely and sweet as this one.

Marie filled this bracelet up with lots of vintage goodies and cute charms, I truly love this. Many of the Vintage Thingie Thursday participants may remember Marie's blog because she participates quiet often on that day. Marie always sports her vintage clothing and always amazes me how wonderfully coordinated everything is in all her vintage flair.

Friday's Fabulous Find: Holiday Gift Idea

Welcome to my first addition of "Friday's Fabulous Find" Holiday Gift Ideas.

The holidays are not too far off, in fact Christmas is LESS than 100 days away.  I wanted to share on Fridays some of the wonderful gift Ideas I have found lately. Hopefully, each Friday, I will have something to share in the weeks to come. It is never too early to get started thinking about the holidays and if you are ordering gifts for loved ones, now is the time to do so.

Do you have a recipe box filled with great-grandma's recipes or other relative's wonderful recipes tucked away in a cabinet or shelf? Did your Aunt Betty have beautiful penmanship and her writing was a work of art? I have found a great gift idea for friends and family members alike.....and I am so excited to share this with you guys.

Treasure.....Yesterday's Memories

For a one of a kind gift, this small home and family run company offers printing of your original vintage recipes onto towels, aprons, or totes. They can even be framed for your kitchen. What a great gift this would make to anyone on your shopping list. Just imagine Grandma's Cookie Recipe (in her own handwriting) printed on a flour sack towel, pair that with a wooden spoon, cookie cutter and all wrapped in a ribbon.....such a sweet gift. For me, the possibilities are endless.

" A unique way to display your loved one's favorite recipe. Remember Aunt Betty's angel food cake that she brought to the family reunions each year, or how about Grandma's apple pie? Send original "recipe" in your loved one's handwriting. The more food, smudges or grease marks on the recipe the better. Capture those special memories on an old fashion flour sack towel. You can display it in your kitchen or order it already framed. You can also choose to have it printed on a apron or tote, your choice. This is truly a one-of-a-kind piece of art for you and your loved ones to enjoy for years to come."

(Please accept my apologies for the bad photos) I was having issues with my camera!

I am going to order several of these this year. Another idea, would be to use these as shower or wedding gifts. Especially if there is a family member who is no longer living but left a legacy of wonderful recipes, this would be so cute and special to give a new bride or groom. Sure beats buying off a registry, and so personal  and unique.

If this is something you are interested in, please contact them right away. Like I said, this is a small family run business and they own a printing company too, so expect 4-5 weeks turnaround for your order. But rest assured, you will be so pleased with the response you get when you give these gifts of treasured memories.
