COLIN LLOYD TUCKER: The Man Behind The Tide

Colin Lloyd Tucker performs and writes music since late seventies. He is not unknown in music industry, although his art is odd enough to keep him in a distant sight. Initially singer/composer of the new-wavers Plain Characters, and The Gadgets, he participates to the first three albums of the lattest, and in the meanwhile forms, along with Simon Turner, the french girls (!!) duo of Deux Filles. Deux Filles make two avant-ambient-instrumental albums before their transformation to the also short-lived Jeremy's Secret.
When, in mid-eighties, Colin goes solo, his music reveals clearer its love for the pop-rock of seventies and a relation with artists such as David Bowie and Peter Hammill.  These  years his output includes releases as "Toybox" (1984, lp made much earlier), "Mind Box" (12'', 1986) and "Head" (mini lp, 1987).

First half of nineties is a quite creative period. Colin finishes and releases on Humbug Records the full album "Remarkable" (1990) and extends his collaboration with Paddy Bush (brother of Kate Bush) to the Bushtucker project.
Fruit  of this collaboration is the album "Skyscraping"(1993), a combination of songwriting, texture and sampling, an ambitious but positive world-art -rock attempt.
Next solo release is "Songs Of Life, Love And Liquid"(1995), more ordinary than previous efforts, marked by Colin's moving to an island off the coast, in the North Sea. The album is out on Humbug again and it is followed by a long "silent" period with some unrealised recording plans and very rare public performances.
"Fear Of  Flying" album breaks finally the silence in 2004 and since then, up to his new pre-announced  work "Inner Nutshell", some more stuff discreetly comes  out. Constantly unpredictable and off the publicity radar Colin Lloyd Tucker continues making new music.

Paper Cup

Here’s my paper cup;
won’t you fill it up?
It should last just long enough for me to drink.

Soon my time is up;
soggy paper cup
falls apart so flimsily and spills my drink.

Pour it all in
My paper cup is waterlogged
but the liquid reached my lips.

Why should I give up,
when my paper cup
gives me drinks, and even sometimes gives me thirst.

Pour it all in.
For all intents and purposes
my old paper cup is all I need.

[lyrics by David Garland]

REBBY SHARP "Into One Mouth And Out The Other" (US, 1989)

REBBY SHARP worked here with SHIMMY DISC boss, KRAMER, and TOM CORA, DAVID LICHT and FRED FRITH for her first (and only) solo LP, a work quite different from her releases with ORTHOTONICS.
Influenced by the avant-art-rock spirit of Rebby's collaborators and also focused on the creation of a poor-sounded atmosphere with references to primitive folk or retro-folk, "In One Mouth and Out The Other" can be seen retrospectively as one of those distant odd pre-announcements of the "weird-folk/lo-fi" genres of the recent years.

BILL DIREEN: Buildings on a velvet land

Poet, author, playwright, and perhaps the greatest less discovered songwriter of NZ's diy culture, BILL DIREEN is responsible for some of the most important episodes of early lo-fi days. His '80 - '84 works - under various monikers (Builders, Bilders, Die Bilder, Bilderine, Soluble Fish, Urbs...) - spirited by haunted velvet psych visions and kiwish post punk rawness, place him at equal height to JEFFERIES bros, ALASTAIR GALBRAITH, CHRIS KNOX, SANDRA BELL...

The introductory compilation, we prepared here, includes selections from:
"Six Impossible Things", 7'', 1981
BILDERS - "Soloman's Ball", 7'', 1981
DIE BILDER - "Schwimmen In Der See", 7'', 1981
BUILDERS - "Beati/en Hearts", LP, 1983
BILDERINE - "Split Seconds", LP, 1984

Musicians : Bill Direen (voc, lyrics, composition, piano, guitars, percussion etc), Malcolm Grant (drums), Campbell Mclay (bass), Peter Stapleton (drums), Allen Meek (keyboards)... and also Steven Cogle, Maryrose Crook, Liz Silver, Lisa Siegel, Hamish Kilgour, Tony O'Blaney, Alec Bathgate, Chris Knox and others...

*Some of the material derives from 90's Flying Nun reissues.

CHRIS NEWMAN " New Songs Of Social Conscience / Six Sick Songs/ London "

"...singing the songs i do not try to be a singer but rather a singing self..."
CHRIS NEWMAN

Songs of social conscience. Songs occured with no preconception as to what they are "meant" to sound like. Songs made of the "not exceptional", grabbed from the bare, uncensored revelation of everyday material...

Chris Newman is a London born artist. He has studied music theatre with great Mauricio Kagel in Cologne. He is also a poet, an author, a visual artist...

The album consists of 14 compositions derived from 1984 (Six Sick Songs), 1990 (New Songs Of Social Conscience) and 1992 (London). Recorded in 1998 in Berlin.

LOUIS PHILIPPE " Appointment with venus" (UK,1986)

Before he started writing songs, the talented Mr
LOUIS PHILIPPE (born 1959 in France as Philippe Auclair) was a university teacher, documentary director, writer... His first music attempts (with "THE BORDER BOYS" and "THE ARCADIANS") released from Brussels based label Le Disques Du Crepuscule circa 1984-85.
That time, MIKE ALWAY had just founded el records (el-Benelux) which first releases supported by Le Disques Du Crepuscule. So Louis Philippe joined el records and after the 12``single "Red roses and red noses" , he released "Appointment with Venus".
"Ivory Tower" and "Yuri Gagarin" were the other two LPs, this romantic "latin-englishman" made for el before the demise of label.

MOMUS " Nicky " (UK,1986)

Accompaniment to CIRCUS MAXIMUS long play album, this 3-track EP shows the european/folk/ballad origins of Nicholas art. Inspired momus spoken adaptions of Jacques Brel tunes constitute a respectful homage to the (greatest of the greatests) belgian songwriter... but Momus whimsical idiosyncracy drips like poison from the heart of the songs.

MOMUS "Timelord" (UK, 1993)

Sheltered and wandering into the empty isolated rooms of open space, the MOMUS persona of this album extends his life bitter account to a sad, skeptical view over the passage of time, the modern human condition & civilization. It `s not the first (nor last) time, Nicholas develops his provocative mixture of irony & lyricism based on negative feelings and a sharp, inauspicious logic fed by despair. It is though, one of the occasions that the difference between the odd roles he plays... and his very own personal "soul & mind striptease" looks very small. And most of those who love him, they would have felt, i guess, that somewhere into the ambiguity of this difference,... it lies the key for such an extremely seductive, influential art.

PETER JEFFERIES "Closed Circuit" (NZ, 2001)

Compared with its predecessors (SUBSTATIC,1998 & ELEVATOR MADNESS,1996) "CLOSED CIRCUIT" is a more song orientated work. Peter concetrates his acoustic-electric, art-minimal-noise aeshtetics in shorter compositions and the album, generally, sounds dense, more lofi, less experimental than past. Critical, yet poetic lyrics place him next to artists like Peter Hammill. He remains one of the last great romantics in a dull world...

ROBERT FORSTER " Warm Nights " (AUS, 1996)

Despite of no commenting on our previous RF post, we feel there is a lot of love and interest in THE GO BETWEENS, and ROBERT FORSTER albums, so ... we post here one more of his solo works.
Recorded in London January/February 1996 (with EDWYN COLLINS as producer & session musician) "WARM NIGHTS" reflects not much of a winter longing for warmth; it is more a sentimental journey, full of images of the endless australian landscape that comes out in mind , under the hot oceanic sky, around or after dusk. Music, lyrics, & album artwork refer to country life daily drama and lonely wandering. Behind town scenes, heavy warm clouded skies, motels, neon lighted signs, highways, luna parks, old cars crashed or parked in the middle of nowhere,... ROBERT misses the TGB days ("Rock-N-Roll friend") ... while accompanying instruments (cello, tuba, sax, trumpet, trombone, flugelhorn) adds to the indie/ country/folk/pop/b-road movie atmosphere some more artistic romance.

ROBERT FORSTER "Calling from a country phone" (AUS, 1993)

After THE GO BETWEENS disbanded,(1989), members GRANT McLENNAN & ROBERT FORSTER went solo for a few years. Rejoined circa 2000, released 3 more albums and became history when GRANT passed away in his sleep at home in Brisbane, in 2006,... while recently, (2008), ROBERT released "THE EVANGELIST", a work with high emotional importance for all those followed the band or members history through the last 30 years.
"CALLING FROM A COUNTRY PHONE", recorded at his native Brisbane in 1993, is second ROBERT`s solo album. After the quest of the indie pop perfectness with TGB, ROBERT pursues a new refreshed contact with the music language of the australian landscape. Following "DANGER IN THE PAST"(1990) - a work with indirect references to the historical/philosophical thoughts of WALTER BENJAMIN(!) - CALLING FROM A COUNTRY PHONE is an LP of that particular electric/acoustic blues-country-folk blended flavour that we recognize as idiosyncratic australian rock and roll.

Autumn sun
pale,weak,
dissatisfaction for those
that want a burning sun
an ever present sun
a guardian sun
a tyrrant.
the Autumn sun
lights beauty, and in natural
corners shadows decay,
the giving and taking that many say
is the way to live.

MOMUS "Slender Sherbet" (UK , 1995)

under the constellation of chameleon...

As requested, here it is "Slender Sherbet", a collection of alter versions of early Momus songs, recorded in Paris, in 1995. Tracks from " Circus Maximus" , "Poison Boyfriend", "Tender Pervert", " Don`t stop the night" LPs etc., revisited (or perhaps revised) by Momus himself, in search of a more fashionable, poisonous, provocative, (experimental sometime) musical form. Stranger than any remix practice, yet equally modern as the middlenineties pop status, Nick covers Nick, knowing well that there is no such thing as a definite composition.

"...if you really love me, you must love my insecurity/ if you really love me, take lovers/if you really love me you must really love my jealousy/ if you really love me, love the others."

MOMUS "the poison boyfriend" (UK,1987)

could have been your consciousness, but i guess that never works, so treat me like an equal till it hurts (from VIOLETS)

MOMUS is the mythological Greek god of mockery and laughter and also the pseudonym behind of which you find the "tender pervert" Scotchman, Nicholas Currie, a like no other, provocative intellectual in the heart of modern music industry. Momus, like a chameleon, changes personas from album to album and from song to song, presenting for more than 20 years now an extraordinary gamut of "others", among which the less famous (as ironically has been said) is himshelf. His musical style, similarly, varies from acoustic ballads, to electropop, acid house, techno, sophisticated lounge, electronic cabaret, a.o. Any kind of fashionable music style can be good enough to "serve" his mocking plans. Although he has the instinct of gifted, simple, catchy melody, the core of his art is more like an author`s, a bitter philosopher`s and a comedian`s, - an ideal combination for controversial acceptance. Nicholas,as one of the most post modern figures in recent music, mixes sociology, anthropology, psycho-sexuality, clear political attitudes, black humour, romantism, cynism, misanthropy and a deep knowledge of literature, confusing the roles of delight and cultural critisism.
THE POISON BOYFRIEND, his second album, first for Creation records, (fortunately has not much to do with the boring sound of this label) is quite influenced by the spirit of poetic european intellectualism. Nick doesn`t hide his love for J.Brel & S.Gainsbourg, while the acoustic style of his fine debut "CIRCUS MAXIMUS" goes parallel with the slow development of an electronic pallete that would master his following works.
The vinyl version, we post here, consists of 8 songs, while another version of the album has additionally: "11 executioners", "what will death be like", and "murderers, the hope of women".These 3 extra songs can be found in "MONSTERS OF LOVE" singles collection (an album we might post in future). Instead of those, our post includes as bonus tracks the 1995 revisited versions of "the gatecrasher" & "closer to you" (from album "SLENDER SHERBET").
